I like that chicken man and cobra girl. Do you plan to use them for anything in the future?

Hnilmik

I wanna use them for something, but I'm not entirely sure what yet. If anything, some dorky, over-the-top "characters fight each other a lot" series reminiscent of GetBackers unless I come up with something more interesting.

As is, Cobra girl is an aloof kind of person, except when with her rooster dude boyfriend (coy~?), and she's mainly about supporting him with her majickz and inflicting status ailments onto their opponents. I can't imagine her doing any kind of hand-to-hand combat. Magic hand/arm movements at most; Very self-restrained. As for chicken man, he's a friendly kind of nice guy who'd punch you if you hurt his healer/girlfriend. He's the muscle, though I'm having trouble imagining him as the hand-to-hand combat kind of person like I'd thought... Maybe because of the way I drew him. He also seems less weapon-user/get-someone-else-to-do-the-work than other characters. I'm very tempted to have him based off of cockfights at the very least and have him shooting chickens out of bazookas at the most extreme.

I want them to be a couple/team (Basilisk? Cockatrice? inb4 snake and cock). They'd probably be the first or second opponents the main character'd be up against. "Mid-boss". They're kinda designed to be beat, as opposed to another team that's kinda designed to be "annoying".

One sheet filled with @$%& for something I'm developing... I finally got a better outfit for the imp, then found it a pain to get her face back to the way I liked it... Claws is getting more fun to draw now that it's a bit easier settling into a set design. Someone mentioned that the fella looked like a boy, when I planned her to be a chick, so I'm tempted to lean more towards an androgynous design.

One sheet filled with really rushed designs for a school project. I wish the drawings were more structured, but hey, if our group is gonna be late in the presentation design front, it's not entirely my fault that I'm gonna cut a few corners in the art department. Gonna fix up 2-3 pictures in Photoshop and I hope to practice some coloring, so... First step, scanned drawing!

Behold, my wonky first-attempt at cel shading, step-by-step.

Lines! ...I wish they were cleaner and I wish I knew what line weight was.

Flats! Nothing dynamic!

Shades! Since the picture wasn't... Dimensional, I couldn't figure out what to do (the sack has to be transparent to fit stuff in it later)... At the very least, I tried figuring out how contrasts worked.

Recorded for this yesterday. CRAZY GORGEOUS. I only have 1 boy voice (still struggling with "acting like a boy" + getting all the right things down; boys just talk differently than girls do), and tried to convince the animator to take another VA on board for Christopher. He insisted that I was enough though, so this was a challenge for me!

you were the blonde kid right? i thought he sounded good. just try and go a little gruffer and deeper. he sorta reminded me of izzy in the digimon dub

Now back to our regularly scheduled program of "Watch Hnil Suck At Drawing A Lot 'Cause She Doesn't Know Half the Things She's Doing"!

I really don't like it when a part of a drawing becomes an afterthought, like an arm or a head... My "artistic foresight" has been getting better, but it still stinks when I start, make it 2/3rds of the way, then don't quite know how a drawing will end.

Referenced sal's flamingo picture since I never saw a flamingo's beak up close to draw it properly before!

Hopefully, the skeleton duo will suck less the more I draw them.

As for a series idea... I sure did develop it a LOT more. Now there's a reason for a lot of characters to beat the crap outta one another, and no, it ain't some stupid tournament--Think: Something akin to your friggin' heart/soul being a commodity to parasites.

I have a vague idea how many episodes there will be, before considering relevant side-stories: A LEAST 10. Roughly 7 minutes each... Fights maybe approximately 3 minutes long per. Side-stories won't have fights--2-3 minutes long each. The story has an ending.

I think my biggest challenge is making the whole world comprehensible yet enjoyable, since I REALLY want to avoid too many monologues, explanations up the wazzoo, and (pardon me being a jerk) Yungjazz's story being more expository than entertaining. My other challenge is... All the characters so far have more motivation than the yet-to-be-existent leading lady/hero + ally. That stinks. I almost always create the rest of the cast before the hero, which sounds less like a good idea every time I do it. The only time where I came up with the hero first was Sam in the Bioshock project, but... That's hitting story block.

And that's the story end.

Now, it's gonna be a long way Like... How the HELL do I, or anyone for that matter, choreograph fight scenes!? For animation? I can watch martial arts tournaments and take some creative liberties, but for animation...?! I guess there's keyframes all over the place for storyboarding before filling in all the stuff in between while animating...?

Hopefully I'll figure it out. All I know is that I'm gonna have to mess up and go through a lot of scrap work first before considering all this realistically possible for someone at my current skill level.

Learning learning learning!

Hnilmik

I tried sketching stuff at school yesterday/today, especially people in the hall since it was a lot more crowded than usual. Finals weeks and all.

Things I learned:
- People walk a lot faster than I thought. Hardly had any time to even get an outline!
- I like drawing legs/scarves/boots/shoes. Long shapes and curves~
- I hate drawing desks. I drew the desks in our classrooms lots of times, but never, ever have I gotten them right to want to share them. They always look so sloppy and drawn-by-a-5-year-old!
- From what I'm told, drawing a perfect circle in a single stroke shows your consistency. No "missing the closing ends", completely round. I tried it. My circles aren't perfect. I can close elongated ovals, but they're inconsistent too. Squares don't count.
- Tried to figure out how I ended up emphasizing angles so much when I like long, curving lines. I kinda found out why.

QuoteI recorded this MONTHS ago, while I was sick and going through midterms (yes, I do look gross). Recorded this scratch track to help a voice actress I'm working with for a project I'm putting together~ Recorded it on video to see how much I move while I'm voice acting.

I was stressed, so I drew pictures.

There's actually much more artwork of "the artist", but I didn't scan 'em in cause a lot 'em turned out like the crappy profile shots. It's getting easier to draw him the way I want though.

I will consider it a personal achievement when I'm able to accurately-enough draw llamas (THEY'RE SO WEIRD AND COOL LIKE THAT), sheep (sheep face =/= horse face), and tigers (tiger face =/= lion face).

I didn't like how her legs turned out... Or her arms, but especially her legs.

XD I also drew fanart for the game 999, but one of 'em is a spoiler.

Crabarms

I like your llamas!

i think you can draw animals better than you can draw people right now, they're more expressive

lenko

yeah your animals are miles better than your humans for some reason. they have stronger shapes and construction too. i think what's bugging me about your humans is the facial structure, they've got these well thought out bodies but the facial features tend to be 'slapped on' symbols (like the really simple mouths), making their heads look kinda flat in comparison to the more fleshed out bodies

Thanks for the feedback~

For some bizarre reason, I just unconsciously draw animals better than people--You can see that I really, really want to draw humans and avoid being a furry artist like the plague, but the animals just turn out better. Always. I usually assumed that it's because "we see humans more often than we do animals, so we can easily pick out the weird stuff when we mess up while drawing humans", but a bunch of my friends agree that somehow, my animals have more "realism" to 'em than my humans.

I don't have any pets, I love watching animal shows and going to zoos once in a blue moon, but I certainly see humans more than I do animals IRL. I don't know how I do it and have lately been flipping back and forth between humans and animals to see what I'm doing differently between the two, but I can't quite figure it out. "I mainly think in shapes for animals" and "I usually draw eyes-nose-mouth (faces) first, then the shape of the head for humans", but there's a lot of crossing over and when I switch methods, I end up losing something. Like, when I draw the shapes and anatomy(?) of the human first (to get the pose down), the face starts looking lame, as if I have trouble figuring out "how to map it".

>_o; It's mildly frustrating.

...But I do see you have a point in the faces. And maybe hands. I'll try to figure it out~

::hugushibushu's for the help~::

GhostingFish

What i think you should do is to think of people more as an animal (because we are animals too). Then draw this 'human animal' as it would look in its 'environment' (you know like a city street, a bus etc. its all apart of our environment)

I hope this helps.

...Ironically, the reason why I draw animals "realistically" is because I understand the loosely similar-ish anatomies between people and animals.

In example, a bird's wing is like a person's arm. There's a shoulder, there's an "elbow", there's a "hand", and it bends pretty much the same way we bend our arms, with maybe the exception of how they fold their wings, which to us is kinda like tucking our hands under our armpits. When they fly, to generate lift and whatnot, they don't just stiffly flap their arms up and down and they don't "swim" in the air either. When we hold our arms out, they're kinda loose and "float-like"--If they're crazy-stiff, they'll feel awkward, guaranteed, and if we do it for long periods of time, it'd probably be tiring fast. Not good for birds, since its their method of getting around. The only time birds would fly with their wings stiff-like would be gliding/soaring, something raptor-like birds would do, but I still remember that their wings have arm-like joints and aren't just sticks with feathers.

(I found an example!)

I can go on and on, but basically: "If I were an animal, this would/wouldn't make sense because..." + occasionally "getting physical" to get a feel for things

emanhattan

you draw really cute animals :y

Hnilmik

I don't know what that emoticon means, but thanks!

I figured I might as well put these into a single post. I voice for Chi-Chi in this Christmas Special of TFS's DBZ Abridged~

I also want to share an animation my bestest best friend in the whole wide world is working on that I'm gonna voice in!
