if you want to pre-download the custom maps do this:
1. get bzip2
2. download the bz2 archives from http://www.thebackalleys.com/tf/maps/
3. unzip these maps in steam/steamapps/yourname/team fortress 2/tf/maps/

tba tf2 server automatically downloads and unzips thesse maps for you. but if your connection sucks you\\\'re probably better off downloading them ahead of time.

I mean I dont mind playing on my own before jumping into a server because it isnt always easy for me to get a decent conection
