The pyro is confirmed female now
when you launch tf2 a new menu comes up
a character like the scout or medic or spy appears at the top right and it says "Why don't you give him a shot?"
but for the pyro it says "Why don't you give her a shot?"

I think the only reason they actually decided to make pyro female probably was the huge fan movement questioning this character's gender. I don't think when creating the pyro anyone from valve even thought of him being female. Valve is very influenced by its fans compared to the usual game developer companies but I like that...
