Quote from: FuzzGOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

I fixed up my server! Turns out one of my RAM slots is burned out. The good news is, it SHOULD still be able to support 16 people.

So J, if you want we can have 2 servers for a while to see how this performs. We could also just use this as a small private server and keep the other one as a full time dedicated public server. Whatever you want to do is cool.

you run the server from your own computer?

Yes I do, I just finished installing the Source SDK. I'll get it up and post the IP sometime tonight... Maybe tomorrow.

EDIT: Well, I tried to put it up, but after setting the options, I tell it to start and I get an Engine error saying "No permissions to run 'tf'." Any ideas? Cause the steam support forums didn't help at all.

the trick to spy sometimes is to never look your "teammate" in the face
and sometimes if he shoots you, just keep moving as if you arent hurt
this fools them pretty often believer it or not unless of course they are a pyro and then well dead

ok, i am pretty sure i have figured this out now. i noticed today the stuttering thing was happening to ALL my games, which means i did something to my computer before i installed steam & tf2. video was resetting/refreshing in CoH while audio was still playing, which means my video card was resetting itself. then i remembered that a few days before all this i was fucking around in cataylst - ATI's driver utility - and accidentally enabled its overclock settings. i wanted to undo it but it didn't let me. i don't recall moving any sliders, but i must have done something to cause the video card to work harder than it was supposed to, therefore forcing it to reset itself during times of stress, which would obviously be during gameplay. its frequency would increase if i upped graphical settings, which completely makes sense if my assumption is correct. the more stress, the more frequent the errors. this totally explains my previous confusion about the constant stutters in tf2 while under 4x AA.

so i completely wiped ATI drivers to hopefully rid it of any memory of me being stupid with the settings, reinstalled, and the problem seems to be gone. i can't open catalyst anymore because there's some kind of conflict with the program's new install and win x64, but factory defaults should do just fine.

of course, the only way to completely tell if this has worked is to play games for hours. i played CoH on my regular settings for an hour and a half and didn't notice anything, while playing for about 15 minutes before all this i was getting the stutters. so here's hoping this worked. even if it didn't, i am positive i have found the root of the problem.

the moral of this story is don't press any buttons that look dangerous

this. also rtil when you play for a while you'll start getting things like the "cloak and dagger" and "dead ringer" which are alternatives to your standard spy watch (the thing that lets you turn invisible by alt-firing). you don't NEED them but they're useful because they can enable to stay invisible forever (given that you pick your times to move around well) and fake your own death respectively. dead ringer is great especially because you can fool a lot of players, get behind their lines and stock up with ammo/health packs, continuously fucking them up from the inside out. like bug/zekey have said, though, playing spy relies a lot on the hope that the enemy team is dumber than you are and that there arent pyros w + m1ing everywhere relentlessly spychecking. if the enemy team has a few noob pyros doing their "job" it's really hard to play spy.

i think they need to decrease the range/damage of the pyro and revamp his mobility by like. making him able to breathe underwater, be able to compression blast himself around, or have a jetpack (this sounds far fetched but i went to this one server where they gave out special abilities to different classes, one of pyro's was the ability to fly for a short time but it used up the flamethrower ammo). good pyros use flanking and sneaky tactics to win, not rushing at the enemy spamming fire and infuriating everyone

kind of ranty but i fucking hate when people play pyro the easy way and kick ass. it's a lot harder to counter this on a bad computer where it takes you 4 seconds to even realize you've turned around when you swivel your mouse around a bit

in any case just to contribute to the thread i wanna say my favorite classes to play are demoman and spy, sometimes soldier because the new weapons kick a ton of ass. yep

i'm really happy that you fixed your computer

i like playing as the pyro but i don't use the flamethrower much unless i'm in a desperate position (read: close combat with a scout). i prefer the long distance flare gun because it's funnier to see people freak out as to why they're on fire when they see no pyros.
