we blink almost instantly. blinks shouldn't last longer than 3 frames unless they're doing something exaggerated
a cartoon blink typically goes like this:
frame 1: closed, eye is a little shorter and wider
frame 3: open all the way, eye is a little taller and thinner
frame 5: eye is back to normal
works every time

study how your friends blink

emulate the timing

dont animate something for the first time without a ref

<emanhattan> it was a better time

My first concrete reference which I still mentally cite when animating blinking is a fast closeup sequence from I think the 4th episode of FLCL. Doesn't matter where it's from, the main thing I learned is to not have the first closing frame be 1/2 way, no, do about 1/4 or a 1/3 way closed. Then two frames closed, then you can repeat the inbetween frame. This give the illusion of the eyelids increasing speed as they close and vice versa.

before you work on the blink you need to fix the eye

i would say the eye itself needs the following as a bare minimum: it should be circular, it should have a pupil within it, and it should have a reflection (depending on your character... good character should always have glint in their eye). you can simplify and make it just a black dot or something but make sure its a circle or itll look like crap

if you put your current eye on a character they would look soulless and weird. and eyes are probably the most important thing in determining character.
I have more of a life writing this review at 1145 pm than you guys do making these movies. . .

Well if youre attempting for something slightly more realistic you could start by adding details you
can observe from real eyes.

like, for one, more pronounced eyelids.

the eyelids are basically just skin covering the round eye, opening and closing.

this isnt a perfect example but

yeah

you get the idea

take into account the rest of the suggestions everyone said too.

the problem with this one is that, while it's very well-drawn and very smooth, the motion is too constant. The eye closes almost instantaneously in a blink, holds for 1 or 2 frames, then spends 2 or 3 frames opening again, usually only with buffer frames at the beginning and end of the motion. I wish I could show you what I mean but flash is broken  Cut out nearly all of the frames at the beginning and remove a few from the middle of the opening animation, and see what happens
