Sketched out 8 character poses, scanned them, inked and colored them in flash and added some neat little doo-dads in the background with a stock paper texture and custom illustrator pens. They're mainly inspired by the Street Fighter IV artwork since I've wanted to try out something like that for a bit now. Any feedback and critique would be well appreciated, I'm leaning towards doing more inking in flash because the lineart comes out way better then doing it irl and taking it back into Photoshop, but I'd like some other views on doing so before I keep at it.

My school's animation major as a whole apparantly has to have portfolios ready for some guy who could show up any day now and I'm attempting to get a few pieces together to show case, so any thoughts on these specifically would be great since I think they make good material for it.

why don't you like, do some sketches of people or something to show that you actually know how to draw proper anatomy. i can't tell from these drawings whether you actually know proportions or not.

glad to see you're doing cel-shading. it looks better than the shading u used before. but i hate that scribbly weird shit in the backgrounds of the first drawings.

lenko

wait is that the boss from DK64?

The lineart is a lot better but i find the 'paint scribbles' kinda distracting! and cel shading fits your style MUCH more.

I have some life drawings we did at one of our previous classes, I should scan those. Otherwise I purposely made the anatomy for these characters a little nutso, but I've gotten a lotta comments on Brawny's skinny torso so I might rework him.

Yeah you guys not likin' those? The SF4 artwork did this cool thing with like ink-strokes surrounding them so I wanted to try that. I have the characters on their own without those though, maybe I'll put them up normally somewhere.

Are these drawings you drew on paper first? If that is the case than i think you should perhaps color the drawings in using markers, color pencils or paints.

Pop that into the scanner and only use photoshop for resizing the images.

I used to do everything with colored pencils back in middle school-early high school, but nowadays I use digital coloring for most everything because it's more convenient for the work I do.

i haven't actually seen the sf4 artwork but i'm going to assume it's painted and not cel shaded. that's why i think it's distracting as a background. not to mention it's solid black, kind of a harsh color

lenko

the reason the sf4 artwork works is because the characters are watercolour too

also i think the harsh, bold blacks are kinda eye-straining in contrast to the clean look of the characters. You have to remember the SF4 illustrations are very 'dirty'.

There's a gradient in all of the ink-stroke thingies but I guess they're not so visible compared to the characters. Aside from those as distractions, is the character art itself alright?

Yeah its nice. i think you need to play around with line width though, it's something i've noticed in a lot of your stuff - you keep the line width/brush size/whatever the exact same size throughout the pic. have a more bolder 'outline' for the characters maybe?

Colours are bang on though, your shading's gotten a lot better.

Hey! This came out pretty good. I really like how you did the shadows on the left- while leaving the original basecolor around the edges of the lines. However you didn't include that anywhere else? I think those shadows are really visually powerful on the 2nd guy from the left (sorry I'm not too familiar with their names :C ) but I'd like to see that continue throughout all the other characters too.

Your lines are considerably cleaner, itd be nice to see you experiment with some more weight to them too, because for the most part they're all the same width. That works, but I think it'd look cool with some heavier edges in places.

As for the drawing itself, I will definitely agree its one of your best pieces, your grasp on facial structure is considerably better than it was in the past. Though I know Brawny's anatomy is supposed to be exaggerated, he has a teeeeeeeeeeeny tiny waist! He looks like he's wearing an invisible corset lol. I think I want to see just a LITTLE more meat on his waist (you can still keep the stylistic exaggeration of course) because it seems just a tiny bit unbalanced

I've tried that with a few other pieces but I feel too much like it's trying to be PPG's linework when I've done it. What I REALLY would like is if I could snag the pressure-sensitivity program for my tablet pen. The cintiqs at my school have them all working for the screens, which I got to try out before. That'd make it much easier to work with on varying line thicknesses for inking like this, since it never really changes otherwise and the smoothing settings in Flash can be kinda wonky from what I've worked with. x_x

I would say as far as characters go, the further you go from a stiff body structure, the better they look.
Like:

I think is really nice, but

is awkward

Not to mention the shading being from color straight to black, it gives the characters an empty and dead feel, especially in cel shading.I would choose what tone of colors to follow, and change the base color as I do the darkness.  This is much easier in photoshop, but still qute doable in flash.

Also I wrote this last night but had to leave it running since the caps game was heating up.

lenko

oh yeah, seeing as brawny is breathing fire i'd give him more contrast with his shading, what with the fire being his main light source and all!
