I don't know of any other program that allows "Musical Typing" - which is why I'm going to buy a MiDi cable for my keyboards, but while I don't have one and my mic sucks ass, I think I'll need to use GarageBand for a while.

I actually started this whole thing so I could see if I really liked making music enough to be able to stand GarageBand... I was afraid I'd buy a cable or a better mic and just leave it in the corner

yeah i liked the beat at the beginning, but once the notes actually started, it got pretty painful. it kinda sounds like a car crash at some parts

music making on a mac is best done in logic or protools!

as for the song, i'm not really feeling it as such, unless your genuinely after a very dissonant and experimental sort of sound! some tips if your using garageband:

- try and reduce the amount of musical riffs you play at once. if you have too many instruments playing at the same time it gives the "car crash" effect as sasha just mentioned!

- when you've recorded a riff using your midi instrument (or keyboard or whatever your using), quantize it to the beat. this makes everything keep a sense of time and rhythm. without it the rhythm tends to drift and the song becomes messy.

- make sure that some instruments don't overpower over everything. when the strings come in etc it's far far too loud and as a result you can't hear the bassline or drums, so turn the volume fader down on the offending channels in the mixer until everything is heard clearly.

Garageband is like eJay / magix etc., as it's a really good place to start when it comes to making your own music - dragging and dropping samples onto a grid and recording your own patterns with ease. When you feel you've mastered the program to it's full potential, it might be worth you investing in Logic - seeing as your using a Mac. It's got a similar interface to garageband but its far more professional.

thanks for the tips, everyone =D That's exactly the kinda feedback I needed!
I got Logic Pro now and before I start making a new song I'm gonna try mixing this one, with what Frankie and Sasha said in mind. Then I'll try a more drum and bass oriented song (not drum n' bass music, you know, the actual instruments).

Yep, I noticed. I feel like I managed to do that for every instrument (since I was careful about syncing) except for the bass line, which has a little odd pause at the end of every run (even if it DOES start at the right time).

should be a function in garageband to automatically quantize the notes in the piano roll. far more practical than doing it yourself (unless your fine tweaking the automatic adjustments)

The volume is a bit low because GarageBand is uncapable of converting the song to an MP3 at a higher volume without quality loss, sorry about that. :/

these songs start out okay, but they don't seem to have a consistent rhythm

i know people are gonna disagree but to me it's definitely an improvement over your last track - it's not so dissonant, and it's got a bit more structure and you appear to have learnt quantizing! it's still not great, but like anything you just gotta keep at it.

my main gripe as sasha mentioned above is that the rhythm is inconsistent. the drum loops appears to be going faster than the tempo you've designated for your project, and as a result there is "blank space" at the end of the groove, throwing the rhythm completely out of proportion, doesn't sound like you've gone for that effect intentionally either.

now i don't use garageband, but it is possible to "timestretch" the sample so that it flawlessly loops and fills that blank space. this method actually applies to logic pro but will work in garageband too i think:

- when you drag a drumloop into your workspace hover your mouse over the bottom right hand corner of the sample whilst holding the option key. you'll see a square bracket icon.

- click and drag to the right or left so that it matches the beat. your sample may be 2 / 4 / 8 / 16 or 32 bars long, so choose the closest to one of those values to snap it to.

- et voila. it should loop perfectly
