Quote from: rtilsaw ponyo tonight!

the theater was packed..at 9:30PM. the audience consisted almost entirely of adults, almost no kids. that was pretty cool, considering district 9 is stealing the show this weekend.

some good news they DON'T use that horrible autotuned pop song we discovered this week. the credits song is almost identical to the japanese version besides the language, and the movie has its original score intact. the english dub is also well done. some of the dialogue is too "awkward" for english audiences, but kids won't care. it's definitely in the spirit of more child-like ghibli films, a simple and light hearted story. i was smiling the whole time. even if you've already seen it/pirated it, go see it in the theaters and support it. otherwise we may not see another ghibli movie with such a wide theater release ever again.

oh, and of course the animation/layouts/colors were amazing but that goes without saying. i can't believe some of the stuff they animated in the underwater scenes, so much going on it was insane. i got the impression the audience was a little starstruck by the complexity in such a simple film. most people have that idea in their heads that 2D is old and irrelevant, i hope ponyo changed their minds.

i will definitely see it in theaters and support it. i know the shitty downloaded copy definitely didn't do it justice

rtil

awesome, you won't regret it

also, i did not stay past most of the credits, so there's a possibility that horrible pop song is at the end of the original credits song, but by that time most people have left so they wont have their eardrums assaulted by disney's pop monstrosity

as i said before, ponyo is amazing but it kind of lacked a climax imo

(it did good without one though. just saying)

miyazaki has said it's a movie for kids the same age as sosuke, aka a kids movie. i think people are expecting a "spirited away" or "princess mononoke" every time they sit down to watch a miyazaki movie. that's not the right idea

Quote from: FuzzThe Super Mario Bros. was an awesome movie! Altho... it really had nothing to do with the game...
probably one of the worst movies i've ever seen next to terrible shit like troll 2 and plan 9 from outer space

Quote from: f0dfirst issue: the characters were all stereotypical horror movie characters. of course there's gonna be a crazy religious fanatic screaming "the world is ending" and of course there's gonna be the logical smart guy whose like "now calm down theres a perfectly good explanation for this" and then of course the logical smart guy eats his words when paranormal shit starts happening and the crazy bitch takes advantage of it. not to mention the creepy kid, what horror film is complete without a creepy kid. cliches like that make me hate the characters. if i hate the characters, i dont care what happens to them. the suspense is gone.
well i dont think you interpreted the characters well at all

or are just overly cynical

1. i dont see many religious fanatics in horror movies, but i dont watch that many of them anyway!!!
2. you never see the logical cave in and "eat his words", he just dies
3. the kid isnt creepy (at all)

i think you were biased when watching the movie, expecting it to be something it isnt
Quote from: f0dsecond issue: the monsters were somewhat scary... until you actually saw them. the real horror should have lied in what you could NOT see, like the beginning scenes when the guy dies off screen and they can only hear it. the mist could have also been a brilliant storytelling device for hiding some sinister secret or big twist, but the explanation at the end felt just plain stupid. when the rationale of your film is that the government accidentally opened a parallel dimension, your whole concept is a cop out. as soon as a bunch of stupid tentacles and giant instincts started popping into the store, the fear was completely gone

ohh also a different lead actor than thomas jane would have been nice
i think you're misinterpreting the movie here too

the most frightening things about the monsters were that you knew so little about them, and if there were others that you never saw at all

probably the coolest scene in the movie was when they were driving away and that gigantic monster (described in the book as so big that it made a 'blue whale look like a trout'). thats when you realize that they were LUCKY to have the monsters that they had, and there was a seeminlgy infinite amount creatures that were all equally menacing (except in the book there was a kite monster, but thats just stephen king being a fuckin weirdo)

but even more, the point of the movies isnt even the monsters. the movie isnt even a horror film imo. its not about being scary, the whole point was that the people in the store were scared, and someone used that fear in order tocontrol them. its like an anti-religion movie, the monsters could have been anything. it could have just been the mafia outside that was scaring the people, either way, it was about people's inability to accept fate and the truth and using religion bullshit yadda yadda etc fuck you

you're entitled to your own opinions and im not saying that there were not major flaws in the movie as well as bad acting and stupid "action" parts that fucked it up (like the old woman that killed the spider thing with hairspray and her torch, really in the book she just sprays it with hairspray and it doesnt die), but really the whole point is to convey a message while having some interesting creatures and stuff on the way, which is why it's different than most horror films

trent bortknob

ok i made some typos from talking too fast

1. i was talking about the logical GUY eating his words
2. the monsters aren't equally menacing, there are some that are much more dangerous thano thers (i dont know why i said that)

and also i wanted to make th point that nobody really knows, in the book or the movie, what causes the mist

some say it was the government, some say its scientist and a parallel universe

the point is that nobody really knows and that it doesnt matter what the cause is, because it's happening and they have to deal with it somehow

i'm sure district 9 is great but ponyo needs all the support it can get on its opening weekend

Ghost Of A Bullet

I didn't think stephen king would connect those stories together like that, pretty cool from what taylor described. I kinda wanna see the mist now, right after District 9

i didnt think the message was strong, i didnt think the creatures were interesting, and i didnt find it at all different than most horror films, and ive seen a lot of horror films. mostly the group dynamic reminded me of dawn of the dead or other movies like that where people are trapped by surrounding monsters and go crazy

im sure it would be better if i had read the book because then id want to see the filmmaker visualize the story i had just read, plus maybe id understand the creatures better because of their backstory, but bottom line the film didnt stand on its own very well at all IMO

one thing i will agree with the kid wasnt creepy but kid actors in general just usually tend to be so bad that it creeps me out
I have more of a life writing this review at 1145 pm than you guys do making these movies. . .

Man I just watched Apocalypse Now with a friend. It isn't scary, but damn, did it ever give me the chills when I was driving him home after.

What's Apocalypse Now about? Does it have anything to do with the apocalypse? Isn't it a war movie? Why the title?

it takes place during the vietnam war, but i think its actually supposed to be based on a book called Heart of Darkness, which takes place in Africa's ivory coast. kind of a shitty book, but the movie is really good. its about an officer who is given secret orders to go into the jungle to kill another officer who has set up his own army of soldiers and local tribesmen, and is also batshit insane. it gets really creepy at some parts

Yeah it's not a scary film or anything, but it's one of those films where after you finish watching it, it stays with you for a while.

And then I found out that water buffalo they killed off at the end was real. Imagine if that happened today.

Apocalypse Now is great. The last bit in the tribe is really trippy and weird though.

I saw Up this week (it's a long wait for some movies over here). Pretty amazing movie. Pixar just keeps getting better every year.
