Animation Schools

Hey, have you even checked out Edinboro University outside of Erie, Pennsylvania? It may be a little far for you, but it's an awesome animation school and fucking CHEAP! I got accepted a few weeks ago for an animation degree and tuition is only $6000... Cheaper if you're a PA resident. LIKE ME! Anyway, very cheap school and the place BREEDS television animators. They teach you every type of mainstream animation and history of animation, teach you creative writing, video editing... etc... etc... etc... It's cool because once you're in your second year, they make you decide which type of animation you want to focus on for the rest of your college years... With others taking a backseat, just in case you want to know them too.

that sounds odd... why would they want to limit you to one medium of animation? who says you cant do traditional, experimental, stop motion, and computer animation all at the same time?

i guess its good to focus on one

but yeah there are probably tons of smaller animation colleges like that where you can get a comparable education for a much lower cost than a university

I probably worded it weird but they pretty much let you learn whichever type best suits you. You have to do at least one project in every medium I think but they'd rather be having kids graduate who are really good at one thing instead of just okay at a lot of things.  For the type of school it is, it's RIDICULOUSLY cheap though.

Ok so im going to take community college here for 2 years and improve in my art
I looked into some things in Cal Arts and I heard things such as its "The harvard" of animation.

is paying like, 40k for 4 years REALLY worth it because it looks like a nice school but, yeesh.

I'm majoring in animation at a place called Columbia College which is a school in Chicago that's been working out pretty well for me. I'm going into my senior year this fall, but it's crazy expensive and I'm taking out quite a bit of lone money to pay for it all. Will it be worth it? Well hopefully. We'll see if I can get a job when I graduate.

CalArts is a great place because they have all the connections with the big studios like Pixar. Of course you can learn a lot in animation school too... I find that you get out of it what you put into it.

Ill see if I can raise money to go somewhere, because I dont know of any great schools here in Texas and the only studio I know is here is the guys who make Jimmy Neutron :/

I'm doing community college art courses to stay on health insurance and maybe learn a thing or two.

I know that I wanna work with cartoons, though.

How do I get finances for art school? I live in Cleveland, so the animation classes here are shit.  I don't mind moving, I just have no money. I tried getting a job several times but I haven't been hired.

If I could pick any school, I'd just do Cal Arts 'cause it's in the area of every animation studio ever and seems pretty cool. If anything it'd be a good excuse to move to the LA area.  

I've thought about getting a job there, and just living in an apartment and seeing where that'd take me, but I don't think it's a good idea because I can't even find a job here.

Anyone here who's going to art school have any secrets for paying for it?

They cover the whole spectrum of animation, and you can concentrate in either 2D or 3D animation at a certain point, like 3rd year. They also give you Character Psychology and Writing courses to improve every facet of your cartoons. The animation building is excellent, they've got big greenscreens and hundreds of high powered computers and tons of cel animation tables. Edinboro is like one of 15 best animation schools in the US, and one of the cheapest. Tuition for me is like $5700 annually since I live in-state.

The building of relevance to animation is Doucette Hall. This thing's a little outdated because Scranton Hall was torn down several years ago and all of the Highlands Apartments have been completed for a while now.

I don't know how relelvent I am to this topic, but i registered to add my 2 cents.

I just recently graduated in the U.K.

I attended the University of the West of England's animation school; The Bristol School of Animation.

The international fees are going to ba around $50000 for your three years of tuition, in TOTAL.

We have good links to aardman, Regular talks from their staff; and have the company founders drop in from time to time.

Every now and then Richard Williams drops by too (DONT mention the cobbler and the thief, seriously) and I've run into him at Aardman a few times (he lives in bristol).

The encounters film is hosted here every year (AMAZING NETWORKING EVENT), great way to get yourself out there.

The curriculum itself is pretty broad and extensive, taking in everything from production scheduling, principles of animation to stop-motion studio health and safety law (OH GOD, I KNOW MORE ABOUT UK HEALTH AND SAFETY LAW THAN I CARE TO).

All the detail is up on the website, but the good part is that you could do what I did and complete 1.5 years of film school and 1.5 years of animation in that order on the same campus. You'd come away with BA (HONS) MEDIA PRACTICE WITH ANIMATION.

John was the guest at encounters this year, Rebecca (in the second photo) is one of my best buds from the final year; She's the junior fellow at the BSA right now, had an extended bout of work experiance at aardman and is on a first name basis with Peter lord, David sproxton and John K. Also most of our year were involved in animating this; Gulp. The world's largest stop-motion animation set, shot on a Nokia N8. (Aardman's 'GULP')

I animated the fish on the right at 18 seconds and you can see me sweeping off the facebook logo
