i started college last week, and now im not so sure if i want to go through with it or not. i've got 9 assessments to complete within 12 weeks. one subject i have to study and pass is an english based one which is annoying cause id rather be learning shit about things that will improve my ability with drawing etc. i dunno, i think its the college fee thats put me off a bit too. but i really just cant decide. at the moment i literally have no money at all as it is. $0 in the bank until i get paid from the government for studying which is a small allowance every fortnight. there are so many things i need and want to buy but surely wont be able while studying. im usually like this though. i go through with something and then shortly after start convincing myself i dont want to do it anymore. i guess i have a fear of finishing and then never being able to pay back my fee i owe, or just not getting into the right industry even with the qualification i may obtain. we had a game company come in and talk to us and they werent even interested in animators, and explained they need a lot of other roles filled which are sub genres from animation, such as particle effects, map developers, etc. i then realized it may be harder to get somewhere then i though as 3D technology seems to be the only area people are interested in nowadays, they dont care if you are a superb animator, just a good modeler.

so now im thinking do i go ahead with it? do i put the money into this college and learn 3d, and the little tiny bits of 2d they teach? or should i do it when i feel the time is right? i guess it is a financial thing for me. if it was free i would probably go ahead with it. i just have no idea now. is this a normal thing to be thinking or did you college guys have no hesitation when it came to applying for college and going for it?

i dunno if anyone will take me seriously here, but i hope for the most part i get some okay advice.

go to school when you have money

in america you can get interest free loans from the government

It'll take you at least a 564894f4sd68646 years to pay back with interest.
My dad is very persistant that I get a loan.
YOU DON'T NEED TO WORK DURING OR AFTER HIGHSCHOOL FOR COLLEGE SON, JUST GET YOURSELF A LOAN

I'll probably still end up getting one even If I do find a job.

Hammi

Ive always doubted on loans. Therefore i will never have loans. Taking up loan for a house or a car is somewhat acceptable, but i wont cross the limit after that.

Why the fuck would you join RTIL's forum if you had a problem with him and his society? I thought you left besides, yes you have talent but that doesn't give you the right to be an arrogant prick - i don't even care if you're joking.

INTEREST FREE LOAN

DO NOT GET A LOAN WITH INTEREST. INTEREST FREE OK??????

LordZeebmork

loans are bad

try to get scholarships or something unless you want to pay a shitwad of money every day for the rest of your life
let's all set our phasers on "boring"

Blordow

scholarships are too complicated to get here. they rarely give them out.

rtil

kinda hard to say considering where you live the opportunities seem a little dry out there for 2d, unless if you want to count quick stunts on subsidiary networks like ross\\\'s gamer tonight. i know this is a stretch but i think the best thing to do might be to get your degree, then find a way to come up to the united states and find work in a place like southern california where there are just heaps and heaps of animation studios.

what\\\'s the name of your major?

Blordow

yeah a lot of places here only rely on 3d. seems to be a huge lack of 2d around where i live. unless theyre just hidden really well and i dont know about them yet.

the degree is called:

Bachelor of Interactive Entertainment (with a Major in Animation)

yeah see

get a fucking interest-free loan. You'll only have to pay back exactly what you got and you'll have no problem once you have your degree

rtil

hey as long as the word 'animation' is in it more power to ya
and at the end of it all it's your reel that is the most important
and you can build that on your own time

Blordow

i dont know if i have the will power to do it though. the fee itself has dragged me down a lot. i keep thinking ill never pay it back when i finish and ill just be kicking myself in the head the whole time im at the college because i made a stupid decision. its only a small little college. prob about 150 odd students max. it aint no huge mainstream one like i imagine them to be like in the states.

rtil

most animation schools here are moderately sized. there can't be more than 1,000 people enrolled where i go. meanwhile university of washington across the lake has almost 50,000 students lmao . paying a fee or a loan back is only a matter of setting money aside gradually as time goes by. they can be the smallest amounts but if you never dig into your savings at some point you'll be able to pay it off.

Blordow

is your college mainly traditional 2d stuff or a mix of 3d aswell? or mainly 3d?

cause my college is mainly 3d, which is a bummer. i tried modeling in 3ds max at college the other day, and its such an annoying program. id much rather use flash and improve on my 2d. GUHHHHH maybe i need to goto a different college.

rtil

3ds max is an awful piece of software for animators. it was originally designed for technical artists and architects. the animation stuff was tacked on later after animators complained. a piece of software designed for animators is maya. i made my final project last year in maya and i was one of the few who actually finished in time because so many people had issues with max, even though we had been learning max for 2 years and maya only that year.

my school is a good mix.

the first year you don't even touch a computer.

2nd year it's digital painting, flash, and an introduction to 3d.

3rd and 4th year it used to be all 3d (they would force you to do your final projects in 3d). but then some real animators took over the art department knowing that some people weren't interested in throwing away traditional mediums for the rest of their lives. needless to say, next semester for our final project, blvd-square and i will be making a cartoon with traditional animation, flash and photoshop.

Blordow

thats awesome. i want to move to america and study there lol

my college doesnt even allow you to use maya, they only let you use 3ds max wtf. even industry related people ive met said they dont use 3ds max in the industry, they use maya. so yeah thats a bit gay.
