For flash 8, is there another way for showing light ( such as light emanating from a lamp post or a lamp or something) besides gradients or just drawing out the light?

clever glow effects!~

and make the opacity flicker I guess.

Oh, wretched ephemeral race ... why do you compel me to tell you what it would be most expedient for you not to hear? What is best of all is utterly beyond your reach: not to be born, not to be, to be nothing. But the second best for you is—to die soon.

if i'm trying to make a light look pretty i usually make something in photoshop with opacity. 8 should also have glow and blur, although they're kind of primitive and generally make things look more cheesy. it's all a matter of tricking the viewer's eye, so whatever looks good you should keep, as long as it's practical (if you have to animate it or something).

Thanks you guys. I guess I'll start experimenting with the glow and blur effects but flash 8 also has opacity like photoshop. Is photoshops better or something?

I would imagine so...

You would imagine wrong they do the same fucken thing

Like I really would know? I just got Photoshop!

photoshop is much better

the lighting filters in photoshop do the trick pretty nicely. make sure you export them as PNGs if you want the effects to be transparent so you can put them over an animation

i prefer using transparent gradients for lighting effects myself but its more about personal preference than anything

the reason i prefer photoshop is because you can control your soft and hard edges. i'll typically use the selection tool to decide on the shape of the light movement, fill it with a gradient with transparency, and then blur the edges as they get further away from the light, because light softens as it travels. same for shadows as well.

nice i gotta try those techniques

they should make a blur tool for flash

i guess itd be kinda weird in vectors but it could work

Coughing

it would lag even more than it does now

...not that it matters i make shit lag without using filters lmao

the problem is that the second you add a blur or glow it's rendering it from vector to raster in every single frame. dynamic blurs and glows would add even more work for the computer to do and probably make it not worth animating. but you can do 'animation' in photoshop, and learning to combine the two packages can make things a lot easier, especially now that there are layer blend modes in flash.
