no. You have to use actual colors. burn and dodge tools are best for mechanical things, not shading.

I know. I just got fed up and half assed it using the tools...

like ssaf said, high res is your friend. go to edit > image size (or something like that) and set the DPI to at least 300. the default is 72 and this is an awful resolution to work at at standard image sizes. DPI is dots per inch. the less you have, the more pixelated your work is going to look.

hahaha. it is NEVER the software you can blame for making your artwork look bad - it is always the artist's fault. you simply do not know how to use the tool, and only practice will make your work shine in photoshop. there's two ways a user can interact with software: the software uses the person, or the person uses the software. you clearly aren't at the latter yet, you don't know how to use the tools in photoshop to your advantage. are you even using layers?

if you like the way flash works, i would suggest learning to use the selection tools to color in shapes, and coloring in a layer underneath your linework. and, of course, working at a high DPI.

Lmao, I hardly use Photoshop, I just got Cs3 and was messing with it... Naw idk how to use layers and all that good stuff. the way I colored the picz on Ps was that I use the magic wand tool and then either lineart or use the paint bucket. Idk if thats a good way of doing it but thats how i did it...

And Rtil what I meant "makes my stuff look like shit" lol If you look at the first pics I showed in this thread. Look at the outline of the face on the uncolored and then the colored. When I use the wand it seems the paint gets to the outline and idk how to fix it...

if you dont want the color to bleed into the outline, you need a layer for the outline and a layer for the colors. but you dont know how to use layers ):

GRINACE

well I know how to make a new layer and go to it. Lol Im gonna try coloring that way.

rtil

i think layered art would suit your style

GRINACE

I think so to. But it's a pain in the ass to color a big area...

how so? use the fill tool/large brush. if you color outside the lines too much, use selection tools to cut out an area.

GRINACE

Ill try that, Lol changin the res make the pic much bigger than it originally was and it was pretty big then...

When I was colouring stuffs in photoshop I also use a separate layer between the outline and the colouring.

This is one of the ways I keep a clear outline though:

"First, double click on the "background" to change it to layer 0. After that create an empty layer above this thing (just leave it as layer 1 for now.)

Now highlight the whole picture (make sure you're on layer 0) and then "copy" it.

Now switch from layer to channels and create a new channel and then paste into it.

After that's done, Ctrl + click the "alpha 1" and switch back to layers. Click on layer one and hold alt and then press backspace and voila, you'll get your line art separated from your BG.

But there's one flaw with my method though and that is sometimes it ignores very light line art but this happens to me only when I use a scanner to scan pencil sketches so make sure it's clear and consistence. It's not a problem if you use tablet to do the lines I think. I just do some pencil lines in Corel painter and then save it as jpeg. It should be fine if you draw the line arts in flash.

And if you're going to use one layer or multiple layers for colouring and shades that's up to you though but having more layers are more flexible."

I've posted this somewhere before so I might just bring it here. I hope it helps.
