painted backgrounds

whats the best program for creating more artistic backgrounds?

im starting this experimental.. thing, and all flashd rawn backgrounds look terrible

atm i have fireworks but i could torrents photoshop or paint shop pro if need be

oh and links to painting tutorials would be much appreciated as i have no idea what im doing!!

not about how to paint, i know that. but how to paint in these programs, im terrible with photoshop

Hmm... I don't know about the best program but I can recommend a good one. Try Corel Painter Essentials 3. It's easier to use than Adobe Photoshop especially if you got a tablet. If not, I'm sad to say that Photoshop is probably your best bet.

As for tutorial I'd say go to deviantart.com and search for "CG tutorials" and ton should popped up.

i like photoshop uh, when it comes down to it any raster painting tool can be used to make beautiful paintings, you just have to learn how to utilize the brushes. you shouldn't need anything fancy like painter

I'm using OpenCanvas for every drawing I do. It can be hard to get used to though.

I got used to it in minuets. I use it and Alias Sketchbook for all my art stuff usually. I didn't think it was hard to use.

I dunno, I think Corel Painter is actually easy to use but I guess it's a matter of preference.

Painting programs are lame, the only good ones are mspaint and macromedia flash.

people who don't like photoshop just don't know how to use it. it has mspaint built into it anyway. i'd recommend opening the brushes tab and experimenting with the settings in there. you can also make your own brushes based on other images. like if you wanted a "dirty" brush, you could start a new file, make some speckles and splotches, then go up to "edit" and "add custom brush". it will be added to your brush set

yeah the custom brushes part is neat but alot of photoshop material just seems to rely on blending and blurring ;(

I just like mspaint more because it makes me feel badass.
I don't need all that layer stuff or that blur stuff etc.
I used photoshop plenty of times, made quite some ok stuff with it but it just isn't mspaint.
Mspaint is DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE CANVAS, RAW, PURE, PRIMITIVE, MANLY, HETEROSEXUAL, PC-USER-LIKE, BADASS.
Also, it's funny to piss off BBS faggots that make all this blurry traced crap by showing them something 1337 drawn in mspaint.
They'll go like AGH MSPAINT SUCK FUCK YOU HOW DARE YOU TO DISS PHOTOSHOP PHOTOSHOP IS BETTER IT HAS MORE FEATURES!!!!

i'm pretty sure everyone knows how to use mspaint
it's moreso a matter of patience. i really dont' have the patience to be making anything in mspaint, plus i don't think it even fits with my style.

i only use one layer in photoshop anyway. one big feature mspaint doesn't have is color blending and pushing, something that is shared by both traditional and digital mediums
