So I was fucking around with the "Overlay" setting and this is the result:

ever since they added the layer blends i've been using them like crazy. it was very smart of them to do that. they could add even more, though. photoshop and aftereffects have up around 20 different kinds of layer blends.

ive used flash since like summer 04 and i still suck at it (mainly because i had a period of 2 years where i only made one frame movies)

if i sat down and actually worked really hard for a long time on something it would probably turn out good

but i dont have the patience

psi is still better than me

I think sinister uses blend/layer effects. Maybe he knows some more?

there's not really a whole lot to know. make a movie clip, go to the properties tab, and check out the layer blends, they're underneath the same bar where you'd do alpha and hue, etc.

they look like blurred circles that are easing in and out on sizes, with some other layer over them giving them that cool look. i dunno though, psi does crazy stuff like this all the time

flash 8 does have those. they're in the "blend" menu in the properties tab for movie clips.

I can show you the .fla. I didn't plan anything like that, it was pure luck to get it to turn out like that, kinda. I tested out some stuff, then I saw overlay did some crazy things and I moved some movieclips around and got this.

There's no filter or masking used in there. It's just a movieclip of a circle with a black, white, black, white gradient (radial) that shape tweens back and forth (the gradient, not the circle). A few of that movieclips with an overlay on a background that is chaning the colors.
