Crazy I really liked Princess Mononoke. I really liked Howl's Moving Castle, and of course Spirited Away. That one with the raccoon balls was Pom Poko and I thought it was pretty silly but had a... kind of nice story I suppose. Good moral lesson yeah.

And now for something completely off-topic, I really love Samurai Champloo. I think it's really great
Oh, wretched ephemeral race ... why do you compel me to tell you what it would be most expedient for you not to hear? What is best of all is utterly beyond your reach: not to be born, not to be, to be nothing. But the second best for you is—to die soon.

You might like Samurai Champloo, the character Mugen makes some really crazy movements that I think are animated beautifully, and I also really like the juxtaposition between ancient Japan and Modern Hip Hop. It sounds weird I suppose but it is done amazingly well, which is no surprise considering it was directed by the man who did Cowboy Bebop.

Quote from: GerkinmanShould be called a boring style

I'd call it more "serene" than boring, like the parts in Spirited Away when Chihiro watches the rainclouds pass by (before trying out a bit of the medicine ball) and when she rides the train. They remind me very much of Asian landscape paintings- very simple and peaceful.

Sonni

I like Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service.

And Samurai Champloo is quite a cool anime indeed. You don't get to see ancient Japan and Hip Hop together everyday.
Quote from: Squeefhollywood just thought itd be cool to make goku an adult who uses uzis and drives ferraris

I wasnt so much commenting on that sort of thing, which i am actually quite fond of. But rather the way every human character has the exact same face, occasionally someone might have a mustache... occasionally, but aside from that there is very little to tell people apart.

They usually have a very... blank look. To me their expresssions should vary a bit more.

it's hard to give characters life, especially in Anime. Which is why I understand why a groupd of animators such as yourselves likes simple cartoons over Anime sometimes, because the cartoons put some life and expression into the characters.

know what im saying?

Yeah, I get ya. The anime characters have an image already set for them ( thanks to precedents, fangirls, and other factors)
I like to read manga over watching anime however, because usually the manga has more of an expression range ( well out of all the ones I've compared )

I also like simple cartoons because theyre simple. Sometimes anime and manga try to put alot of detail to make it good. But if they cross the line between good detail and too much detail, then it just gets plain confusing or forced.

you can also get a lot of the lacking emotion through with a good backscore, the music helps a lot.

Have you guys ever seen Tokyo Godfathers? It's a story about 3 hobos who find an abandoned baby in a dumpster on christmas eve.
It's a fucking fantastic comedy film. One of those rare adult animated films that's funny without being vulgar. It feels almost like a Coen brothers movie.

One of the cool things about it though, is that the characters all show very human facial expressions.

It's by satoshi kon, the same bloke who gave us paprika, millenium actress, paranoia agent, and a very frightening film called Perfect Blue.
Also did the first film in the "Memories" film trilogy which I really need to get on dvd. It's at the blockbuster I work at, but I know its eventually going to get scratched and stop working and then our anime section will suck even more balls.
It really does suck too. Other than tokyo godfathers, memories, ghibli films, and a small smattering of excel saga, we have nothing but really cheap ecchi/hentai smut.
We've started putting LEGO BIONICLE dvd's there to try to make it seem less perverse.

Yeah ZSL I saw Tokyo Godfathers, my brother has shown me a lot of stuff by Satoshi Kon after I told him how much I fucking adored "Paprika"

Good point on the expressiveness of the characters, it never even crossed my mind to bring that film up.
