i think a better response would be to ask them what's wrong with animation as a medium of entertainment. surely there's at least one animated film everyone likes..  usually a pixar film or some disney film from their childhood. they'll probably respond with 'but anime is different because...' which is pointless and trivial but could be easily debated if you wanted to waste your time arguing with them. there's just a lack of respect for animation in general in the world, and most people who are biased against japanese animation don't understand how important it is to the very young history of animation and where we would - or rather wouldn't - be today without it.

I wasnt trying to be ironic, I genuinely like Shaolin Soccer,  i just put a lighthearted joke into it by calling it an anime. No disrespect to japanese animation,  really. I aspire to become a professional animator myself so im not making fun of either things, I just didnt realize youd get your pants in a twist over the fact that I made a joke regarding anime. I get we have a select few people that just shit on everything that is holy to get a reaction out of others but to be truthful I aint one of those people.

i liked it alot, until it got to the finale, which was just an apocalypse of story twists for the last ten minutes.

Yeah the ending isn't great I would have liked it better than TTG if it had kept exploring the themes it did in the first half.

I'm sorry I know me and michaell joint shitpost a lot but reading back over this i genuinely think i came across as far more dismissive and/or ignorant than i meant to. Obviously it was irony, but to continue intelligent discussion, because I am genuinely interested now, I propose this:

You note earlier how integral Japanese animation has been to the development of the medium, but only in recent years has anime crossed over from Japan into the western world (let alone anywhere else) whereas the Disney films of old have been crossing western and eastern borders alike since time immemorial. What fundamental characteristics of anime have crossed into western animation and helped it evolve, and at what point? I'd like to say it was the opposite, but with Japan's xenophobic and 'closed off' culture, I can't really see westernization affecting any facets of anime - but please correct me if I'm wrong

TLDR Basically I want to know how anime has influenced animation and helped it grow as a medium, as a whole, thanks

The 70s/80s aren't that recent.

Also Tezuka was unapologetically influenced by Disney and Fleischer.
