So now that the latest patch is out and has fixed (most) of the exploits and bugs, I thought I'd post about Spoobysoft's most recent Tom Clancy game. I had been following this game since the original E3 reveal, hoping the game lived up to the experience promised in the trailer. I missed out on the beta but got a free copy of the game with my GTX 970. The first couple of months were pretty shaky as hell, with connection issues, poor hit detection and really bad exploits. I stuck with it because despite all that, there was a wonderfully designed FPS laying underneath. Now that things have calmed down and I'm 80+ hours in, I can confidently say this game is of my favorite shooters in recent memory, with unique gameplay that makes every match different and heart-poundingly exciting.

Original Trailer:

This was clearly scripted and not final gameplay, but surprisingly the finished product feels pretty similar.

Compare the same level, where I pull off a 1 v 5 clutch:

The ability to breach through multiple surfaces and come from any direction offers an element of surprise for the attacking team. Since the defending team can employ traps and reinforcements in limited amounts throughout the level, strategy has several layers of depth to it. If the game hadn't been off to such a shit start I think it would be more popular than it is, but even now I think it has the potential to be a strong competitive shooter.

i'm trying not to get excited about this because it's ubisoft.  i know i shouldn't write it off immediately and i won't, but i've been really disappointed with tom clancy games over the last few years, and it's sad cuz i have good memories of older ones.

the biggest problem with the last one i used to play was the server issues. trying to organize a game with friends was way harder than it should have been. so much so that after a few months we just gave up on it and i'm pretty sure the developers did, too.

does this game have a healthy playerbase?

For now. I actually think it tapered off a bit when they had the winter steam sale and everyone hopped on at once, crushing Ubisoft's servers. A lot of people disappointed.

Squad-making and connection issues still aren't perfect, but it's come a long way. I've been able to play every night for the past few weeks with a team of 4-5  people, with a couple hiccups here and there that are usually fixed by restarting Uplay. It seems they can't quite nail down one connection error, but we still manage to get matches 3/4 times and once you're in it's stable until you back out to main menu.

its a fun game the reliance on thatcher and thermite on the attacking team sometimes gets a little annoying if no one picks them tho

the ranking matchmaking system seems strangely balanced as well this might be something theyve fixed already but i dont even know why there was a player level or rank associated with your profile when matchmaking would constantly group you against players 6-7 times your own level. not that it really matters that much it just means theyve played the game a lot longer than you have

isnt there supposed to be an update coming out with new canadian operators or was that a ruse

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

"...it stimulates the part of the brain called "shatners-bassoon", and that's the bit of the brain that deals with...time perception..."

Canadian operators came out last week for season pass holders and last tuesday for everyone else, but they cost a ridiculous amount of earned in-game currency. They're really fun to use; the girl with bear traps is especially fun and not useless like Kapkan is without his invisible traps glitch.

They still haven't figured out ranked. They noticed that 80% of the playerbase is concentrated in silver, so they added a copper league and tried to evenly redistribute everyone, but it didn't solve the issue of being matched with people wildly outside your rank. The problem is that most people are still playing casual, and when they do play ranked they want to play with pre-made teams. So the already small ranked playerbase is divided even more based on how much of your team is pre-made or not, and when I play with a pre-made 4 or 5 man team we sometimes queue up against Diamonds and Plats despite being Gold/Silver. It's gotten better, but I'm noticing ranking up is ridiculously difficult while ranking down happens almost immediately, and placement games are weighted much more than games you play after. I had a 1.5 win rate when I was running solo, got ranked Silver IV. Then my buddies got the game and we went on a 5 game win streak, and I rose to Gold I, but my friends who had just joined me got placed in Gold IV, despite me having the highest KD in every game.

I actually enjoy playing Thermite but I can see how it would get stale to see the same operators over and over. I think a few just need quality of life buffs. People aren't experimenting/communicating effectively to make the other operators stand out; I've seen quite a few teams do incredibly well with unorthodox comps.

They have this interactive whiteboard on their website for planning out strategy. It's buggy as hell, clearly not a priority for them since it's taken this long just to iron out server issues and exploits, but I like the concept. Hopefully they'll polish it a bit more.

Hilarious, especially the hijacking in the comments. This has to be an intentional stunt by one of his aides, I can't see how they'd accidentally choose this photo to represent the FBI when it doesn't come up on google image search.
