The Future!

In various works of fiction of the past like Back to the future, they see the 2000s,2010s, and even the 2020s as the beginning eras of holograms, flying cars, hover cars/shoes/boards, unlimited cold fusion power, the works.
Yet the future we are living is most certainly nothing like that.
Why do you think this is? Is it political parties that are fighting over ideologies of who should do what and who cant do what or could it be a disinterest from the public's side to help support science and engineering?

to have the impression that our present isnt as futuristic as we anticipated is simply shallow imo, as predicted technology has quickly escalated, if thats not good enough then you probably have way too high standards.

I understand that there are technologies, like smart devices specifically smart phones, that have more than reached our expectation and that those stories are science fiction. I guess what I was thinking more of was how different it turned out, as in not as glamorous. That we would be focusing more on things like space travel or being able to travel around the world faster without using fossil fuels. Tesla Motors sees a future like this, not really the space part but the energy part yes. I mean even a significant number of United States don't even have one nuclear power plant.

A lot of Asimov's, Clarke's, etc.'s predictions about the internet actually did come to fruition, but most of those hypotheses were shared by prominent media theorists of the time like Marshall McLuhan.

If you want to make short-term predictions, it's probably better to cross examine those made by sci-fi authors with experts in other fields. Pop culture's vision of the future is always chrome (or dust), because they want you to buy into it. Key word being buy.

I would say we feel more compelled to invest in ourselves through identity politics, greed, and narcissism instead of feeling compelled to produce a better future for those that come after us.
I hoped when I was a kid that we'd have geared our industry and research to taking mankind off the planet by the time I turned 20, instead it's been geared to making safe spaces for LGBTBBQALHFASIOHWSD people, elongating middle eastern proxy wars, and spying on the whole world.

On that note, I feel as though in these sorts of threads or discussions, people tend to largely overlook the advances we have made. We may have no hoverboards, but consider the oxboard – it's slightly faster than walking.
