I haven't read much about it, but it's weird how out of (proper) context (i.e. the Middle East) explosions cause such an international media stir.

Well not really weird, but still it sucks.

I'm so sick of both sides of this stupid ISIS conflict.

In the name of Harman.

gotta love all the idiots on twitter clogging up the hashtags meant for Parisians looking for shelter or trying to actually help

Bamyasi

Oh god.

What's happening?

Have we reached critical twitstorm?

d-floe

It's a real shame what happened. Stuff like this happens regularly in middle eastern developing countries but to see something of this calibur to happen in a first world western country is unheard of. Central and western Europe is in a pretty tough spot, on one hand some want to help those escaping from the war, yet on the other hand they're risking the safety of the people. I think it's well overdue that the world superpowers take on these middle eastern terrorist groups. Clearly nobody is safe from this kind of terrorist activity.

parisians were using #PorteOuverte to seek shelter, and then people + msm noticed that they were and started reporting/talking about it, thus cluttering the hashtag with nonsense and defeating the purpose of it

Bamyasi

If there was ever proof that old media and new media should keep their distance, or that the former should stop reporting on the latter as if hashtags were actual fucking meatspace events that actually fucking mattered, that would be it.

I agree with you but it's worth noting that the "Middle Eastern developing countries" were in fact developed, even with their perhaps tyrannical (but functional) dictatorships, when the West stepped in to coco-colonize them. If these countries wanted to overthrow their regimes, they needed to do it themselves, create their own legends and birth their own revolutionary heroes. Imagine if during the (admittedly incomparable) American revolution, a race of opportunistic, technologically advanced aliens landed on American shores and offered to lend their death rays and rail guns, while simultaneously making underhand deals with the Founding Fathers for all of their gold and lithium deposits. Everything works in the Americans' favor and the British forces are wiped out, but even then the aliens don't leave, and build their own fast food restaurants and retail outlets on land previously owned by natives and capitalists. So there's another tyrannical force hindering American sovereignty. That tyrannical force is analogous to what ISIS is fighting today.

The West has been at war with ISIS for a while, some would say since the Crusades, but they will never win. It's easy to destroy an army with advanced alien weaponry. It is much harder to stomp out an idea.
