I have never played a Fallout game, not even the one I actually own: Fallout 2.

^Christ.

It should come as a surprise to no one that the highest appraisal on Metacritic for this game comes from someone who isn't fluent in English:

I have never played a Bethesda game, but I will never forgive them for stealing my best friends when Elder Scrubs IV came out.

I even asked them if we could go play Oblivion outside that's how cute I was.

I'm sorry for your loss. My friend too was stolen by that game, I have not seen them in years.

its so dull, more like fallout BORE HAHA WHERES MY FUCKING REFUND

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

Bethesda seems to be experiencing a lot of fallout for making this game.

I'm enjoying it, I think half the reason you don't like it is because it's popular / it's been hyped / it isn't made by some shitty indie company who sit on soundcloud jacking off into a pool of obscure electronic tears that no one cares about

oblivion was fucking amazing dont care what you all say valthume valthume i can't hear you what's that speak up that's right youve come to the end of this

I don't really like most American indie games any more than AAA games tbh. I'm glad you're enjoying it though.

I couldn't resist.

Though I kind of hope they do, or at least clean up their act.

If I dislike Bethesda though, it's not because their games are unforgivably unpolished, or because they stole friendships, it's because I find their representation of human anatomy to be incredibly unflattering.

No decent art director would let their project ship with such vulgar renderings of the human face.

It's not just Bethesda though, even that French studio they contracted to design Dishonored fared little better:

I mean what made them think this was okay to do.

This may seem petty to most people, but if I have to sit and stare at a screen for 50+ hours I'd appreciate having something non vomit-inducing to look at.

I apologize for starting the thread with three consecutive shitposts if anyone wanted to talk about the positive aspects of this game, which I'm sure exist. This is just the first time we've seen a significant public backlash to one of their products and it's dredging up bad blood. Bad consumerist blood, perhaps the worst kind.

never played one of these games but i agree with @Des Esseintes, their facial anatomy is pretty bad and the female characters have very masculine features. also the graphics engine/polish seems lazy and outdated. but i think the biggest problem is that Todd Howard fellow, who made sky-high promises about this game that the developers simply couldn't keep. he wouldn't be the first to make this mistake and he won't be the last, but it probably does drive sales. then again i've heard it's a big step backwards from 3.

either way it was gonna sell well, it's a popular franchise

Bamyasi

Here are a few screenshots of the facial anatomy in Fallout 4 I capped from a video review.

I've spoilered all of them because I don't want to ruin any plot elements for people enjoying the game:

At the very least it makes me extremely grateful for Overwatch, which has wonderful character designs, even if you're mostly shooting at rather than admiring them as you play.

I also have gripes with the open world/sandbox design blueprint, in that it shifts control from the people who should be in charge of the narrative (artists and writers) to those who shouldn't ( directors, programmers, and xX360N0Sc0p3k1d420Xx_).

In my opinion, the storytelling mechanics of visual novels, survival-horror games and some JRPGs (in which seemingly insignificant choices decide the ending) are much more artistically honest than those of WRPGs, in which binary morality or even heavy-handed moral ambiguity play a major role. The latter isn't really how life works. It's very rarely major decisions which shape our destiny, but rather the very minor ones we make every day. This is why I find "A. Go to the park or B. Go to the library" to be an infinitely more compelling choice to make than "A. Save the world or B. Save your hamster," because WRPGs usually try to make the consequences of your actions as perceivable as possible (i.e. ego trip), whereas with games in the former category leave room for surprises, which real life is full of.

Given I'm only making this judgement based on the only WRPGs I've ever completed (Deus Ex and KOTOR), and inferring more or less how they've evolved since then as I mostly know about them from second-hand accounts.

I don't think Kotor or Deus Ex are really comparable to Fallout but w/e. Kotor II was fucking awesome though

people keep telling me fallout 4 will be okay because mods though

i just want to say i think thats the fucking stupidest argument ive heard and it happens all the time. best example was when i said i hated old minecraft because it was boring as fuck. people said its okay theres mods for basically everything in game

if you do that arent you now just playing a copy of the game YOUD RATHER PLAY INSTEAD of the broken/ buggy/ boring mess you received. is it not pretty worrying that the game is so flawed you have to change as many elements of it as you can to make it enjoyable.

i appreciate people making the best of a terrible situation and i understand that the modding community can take a video game in an interesting fun direction but fuck "i can make the game better by changing all the bad parts, so its ok its a great game" seems so strange to me.

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

Yeah I've always been pretty suspicious of modding because I think it skews objective critical assessment.

I can't think of any other medium where that would be acceptable. It's like saying "Oh yeah, such and such movie/book was mediocre, but if you take these scenes/pages and replace them with these, written by fans, well, it's a fukken masterpiece."

But hell even one of the few somewhat intelligent game critics on youtube used pretty much that exact argument in his review:
