Undertale the friendly rpg where everyone noone has to die.

If you haven't tried Undertale yet, well get on it. The demos RIGHT here. http://undertale.com/demo.htm  Seriously if you consider looking into this, the demos the best spoiler free way.

I don't really have much to discuss without spoiling the plot, some might find the plot to be pretty cheesy but I kind of like that about it. Maybe I'll post some spoiler tagged criticisms on it if there's even a single soul out there that cares.
I like the battle system, it's like a shoot-em-up (some disagree on this though for some reason), RPG hybrid, where strangely, you don't shoot, or have to attack.

someone said on my stream yesterday that this is objectively the best game ever made

i don't believe him

Yeah I think achieving this is virtually impossible for any game. It's just one of those games I can really call an experience.

DO IT FOR HIM
but for real if you've played mother 3 or earthbound and liked it then you'll like this game

Bamyasi

I finished the demo.

Even though it seems to embody pretty much everything I dislike about western indie games (quirky, ironic humor mixed with ostensibly unironic moralism; self-conscious witticism that distracts from any sincere storytelling; derision of bad game tropes without actually fixing them or making new, better ones (especially apparent in the demo); Earthbound fetishism; and an undying will for the medium to be validated as "art" by both insiders and, more worryingly, outsiders, and therefore a de-emphasis on enjoyment (whoever says art shouldn't strive to be enjoyable deserves all the packaged enjoyment of an un-anesthetized lobotomy)), I'll still play it if you're recommending it. I will probably even like it.

That said, I really think it should be free.
So I'm torrenting it.
I don't know why you'd keep playing if you pretty much know what to expect. But hey, I'd be interested to hear more of your input if you do play the full version.

Bamyasi

I put the qualifier there because I expect the game to confound my expectations.

If I was blatantly wrong on any of those points I'd hope you'd correct me.

i must have either done something horribly wrong or done something the developer didn't expect because i can't beat the game. i'm stuck at the end and i am 99.99% sure there's nothing i can do to get to it, so i guess i'm done with it.

it had some funny and cute moments. the backstory reveal was pretty compelling. but overall i mostly had no idea what the fuck was going on. none of the subplots in the game seemed to connect to eachother except the very beginning and end. and in the ending i got, i did exactly what was expected of me (which is also the only thing you can do) and got a game over anyway.

and now i have no reason to trust game recommendations even though i've only spent a mere $16 and change on the last two titles i was told to purchase i didn't really like either of them. i should've stuck to my gut on this one. i'm giving it a lower score than i should because i literally cannot beat it and i'm not sitting through it again. 4/10 would not recommend. solid soundtrack though

i cant really find anyway to say how to beat the game without spoiling anything major but since you say you're done i can tell you.
while i like the game, the one glaring thing i really dislike about it is that its artificially longer than it actually is. in other words, you have to play it multiple times to beat it. you are doomed to get the neutral end even if you did what the game wanted you to do, which is not to kill anything. if you spare flowey at the end without killing anything he tells you to go back before you face asgore in your save at the end of the credits. if you do you will get a call from undyne to do something. from there on i think its pretty straight forward to get the true end.

i went in blind on my first playthrough and killed flowey.. needless to say i had to restart after realizing i couldn't kill ANYTHING at all in order to get the good end. and even when i restarted he wasn't there to talk to me at the beginning because the game still 'remembers' what you did previously.

also dont do a 'genocide' run. you will literally break your game if you do. im not joking the game is permanently damaged as 'punishment'.
that's fucking retarded but i think i need to explain because i don't think i got a neutral ending or any ending for that matter
the only thing i killed in the game was the lady in the house who tries to stop you from going out the door. oh and i guess the very first dummy on a stick if that even counts i don't know. i actually didn't think that fighting her would kill her, and in one hit she lost half her health and 'died'. it seemed like i had no choice to fight her and that's why i did it. with everything else it seemed like there was a way to get to spare or escape, so that's what i tried. the game doesn't really seem to lean towards combat anyway as the item and stat system is rather crude.

so after a few hours of nonsensical bullshit i get to the king, he says he has to fight me and take my soul or whatever. at this point because i have killed only 1 thing the entire game my health and hp is very low. i think i had 36hp. i have a couple healing items, but not enough to keep restoring myself so i can beat him because he takes the "mercy" menu option away and so i have no choice but to try and beat him. the closest i can get to beating him is around 25% of his health. at that point i start to run out of items, his attacks become so ridiculously fast they become impossible to dodge and i end up dying.

i let him kill me 8 times in a row thinking the game was playing some kind of trick but it's the same outcome every time. if i'm supposed to let him kill me more the game doesn't do a very good job of communicating that. so my ending is just the same old "game over" screen you get where you'd die anywhere else.

hypothetically (if the game will let me - i don't know) i could retrace my steps back to the villages and do random encounters, kill stuff/get enough gold to level up/get enough items so i could beat him, but what the fuck is the point of that? i'm pretty sure that's not what i'm supposed to do and i have zero interest in doing it as well.

also wouldn't having the king killing me be exactly what he wants? if i'm dead he can take my soul and seal off the portal or whatever, right? i thought that was the whole point, being some kind of martyr for the monster world. this game makes no fucking sense
i don't want to play the 'lol u just suck' card but yea you are supposed to beat him. as long as you're stocked up on health items and equip something with decently good defense then you should be able to do it, even if you didn't kill anything.

after you beat him he will give you the option to either finish him off or spare him (the mercy option comes back), but tbh i'm pretty sure both options lead to the same thing which is flowey comes in at the last second and absorbs the souls.. leading to the flowey fight. and if you couldn't get past the king i'd doubt you'd get past flowey because it just becomes a bullet hell by then.
also the game tries to be scary and quits itself every time you lose to flowey.

yes i do suck but one of my friends told me they  beat him with 20 hp so i went back and did it. turns out i was actually wrong the only healing item i had was the snowman piece. i managed to beat him with 2hp after a few more tries. i picked the mercy option and the flower closed the game. cool! now i'm actually done. now that was the piece of shit ending i can be happy with
btw to anyone who thinks that the ending mechanics of Undertale have never been done before look up the VN "Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi" and i doubt that was the first game to do it either

after playing through undertale for the first time, i have to say it was a hell of an experience, definitely recommend
i can't recall the last time a game made me feel distraught- when flowey shows up, kills asgore, steals the souls, and closes the game i felt completely mind-fucked

and then the final boss fight happened jesus christ

who knew a game with so much light-hearted comedy can also genuinely terrify you
