Are we supposed to post actual sad stuff in this thread, sad media, or what?

Regardless I highly doubt anyone could top this:

does dr strangelove really belong in the thread of sad? i didn't find the film very sad. it's dark but not sad

Bamyasi

Yeah I just realized that and nuked my post thus creating a time paradox. It may not be all that sad but I definitely cry every time I watch it.

Not that most of the stuff in this thread is very sad though.

Quote from: a faggotThe explosion sequence in Metropolis is fantastic but imo Dr. Strangelove did the contrapuntal sound thing better, even though it's just stock footage and not thousands of yen's worth of CGI and sakuga:

It's probably one of my top 3 ending sequences ever if not my favorite.

Don't watch if you haven't seen the movie because it will ruin absolutely everything. Seriously. The movie is structured
like sexual intercourse
and every shot and plot development sets up for the finale so perfectly.

Holy fuck that's gotta be the most well animated sequence Ive ever laid my own eyes on.

Bamyasi

Really? I mean it's good but isn't it like 70% CG?

i thought we were paying attention to how sad the films were and not how they were animated, but tbh i kinda liked the pre-3d animation era where they would try to merge 3d and 2d together. think of Iron Giant and Treasure Planet.

as for Robot Carnival Presence the ending to that is a bit strange but all around i liked it. imo not as sad as Metropolis though.

also has anyone else noticed how there aren't anymore animated sequences of city / building mass destruction post 9/11

Well OP brought it up. I was just curious because by the time I was 16 I had already seen movies like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, VHD: Bloodlust, Paprika, Disappearance etc. so I was just curious about Kizu's frame of reference. There's nothing wrong with CG, but I think people are generally more impressed if animation is entirely or largely hand drawn. That's all I was asking.

Yeah it doesn't make a whole mess of sense (I think it would have made more had a pre-singularity relationship between MC and the android been detailed, but they probably ran out of money (not that Umetsu's work is known for its well constructed storylines)). Then again, I think most of the saddest stories appeal more to your guts than your cerebral cortex (i.e, they're more pathetic than rationally "sad"), so they don't really have to make sense, kind of like horror.

A lot of the Sekai Meisaku Douwa films Toei made in the late 70s/early 80s were like that. Especially the Little Fucking Mermaid.
