Jon

Take it up with the dream version of me, idk my dreams are fuckin weird

Bamyasi

Does anyone else have really violent dreams sometimes? Honestly I probably have those on a more regular basis than nightmares.

Like this one I had last night. All the people from my place of employment somehow ended up at this abandoned apartment building where a kingpin operated from. Long story short, we ended up caught between this turf war between a gang of teenage web personalities and the cartel. It was like a mix between Rian Johnson's movie Brick and the first The Raid movie.

Every time one of the gang members tried to enter the building, I would see their body parts fly against the opposite wall, with whatever butchered them remaining out of view. That was the first floor, and apparently worse things would happen to people who made it to the other floors.

I need to be held.

SHADOWFOX2

I will hold you Bam c'mere pls

But yeah I have violent dreams a lot, usually ending in screaming.
Then I realize I kinda need to sleep so I must return to the void.
It's really hard for me to control my dreams, so I'm used to it by now, so no big deal!

i should try these

valiums

I wonder if I can control my dreams to an extent / be momentarily lucid because I spend my time before sleep daydreaming as hard as possible. I would suggest trying it if you're having dreams you don't want, if I could verify it at all lol.

I had a dream once where two people talked about how unrealistic the dream was and started messing with it themselves. It was p cool.

See now I thought you had some control over your dream once you realized it was a dream.
Or maybe I assumed too much in thinking that because your subjects knew it was a dream, that you would automatically become aware of it as well?
Once anyone uses the d word or the phrase 'not real', usually the jig is up.
That never happens with me though, because I never question if something is real or not. I just don't care. I go for the ride, good or bad.
The most I've ever gotten to controlling my dreams was talking in my sleep, and I woke up the moment I did because I realized what I did (and needed to play it off like I didn't)

1. Lots of pillows
2. Background noise!
3. Lights
4. PM if you're really curious
Exercise if I really need to be asleep.

Maybe it was that my dream people weren't aware that it was a dream precisely either. They just knew that things were weird, and they could do what they wanted. Which isn't really that different from them, say, thinking that the world is too blue, and then having a cup of tea and turning into two flaming hotels. Typical dreamy bullshit.
I never question the reality of my dreams. I just automatically intervene when they aren't going in a "good" direction... which means I am always lucid in some sense? I could just be lucking out and getting to the bad stuff when going from REM to the more awake state.

I prefer complete silence, but if there's even a little intermittent noise, I have to have music to cover it.

Oh yeah, I remember reading about this lady who wanted a dream interpreted - she 1) had on a gold ring, and 2) touched a lamppost. I was fucking floored when I heard her dream, because none of mine are that small and, dare I say, uneventful. Do you guys have tiny dreams? [/hijacking nightmares thread]

rtil

tbh my dreams are pretty uneventful. i can't remember the last time i had a nightmare, and i usually don't remember my dreams anyway. but when i do, they tend to be rather ordinary. the only interesting thing about my dreams - in my opinion - is that the people i know and places i frequent are unique to them, and they are reoccurring, as if there's a "persistent universe" in my head. not even my family is the same in my dreams. it's possible that the person i am experiencing being in my dreams may not even be me, i'm not sure as no one's ever called me by name and i've never looked in a mirror (as far as i can remember). maybe this is normal and this happens to a lot of people, i don't know cuz i never really talk about this kind of stuff.

Don't ever look in a mirror in your dreams, it's never ended well for me personally. What happens when I do? It all falls apart. IT ALL FALLS APART.

The thing about the person you're experiencing not being you makes sense. I mean we all look into the perspective of other characters all the time through fiction...forced to spectate their actions agreeable or not.
I feel any person I've ever been in my dreams was a reflection of my self though, regardless of what I looked like.

Bamyasi

Yeah, never look in a mirror during a lucid dream. Also rtil's dream world sounds interesting.

Curious, how do you guys fall asleep?
It's really quite simple:

  • Blackout curtains must be installed on every window. Not even a tiny beam of daylight, moonlight or urban vapor may reach my sensitive blue eyes. Preferably the room features no windows at all.
  • A silk mask must be worn over said eyes, because if they aren't covered, they're open. Also to occlude them from any remaining light emanating from LEDs, though most likely all electronics will be off.
  • Earplugs, for similar reasons. It's pretty noisy where I live, so earplugs or headphones are a must. Sometimes I listen to lame ASMR videos if I need white noise or whatever.
  • The thermostat must be perpetually set to a steady, cryogenic temperature. 65° Fahrenheit is optimal, but anything ranging between 66° and 67° will also do. Anything higher and I will melt.
  • A fan must be situated to provide me with a relaxing breeze, as well as a flow of oxygen, because I sleep with the blankets fully over my face.
  • A glass of warm milk must be at the ready on my bedside table. Not to drink, but for atmospheric purposes.
  • The mattress must be soft and cool.
  • On said mattress, the presence of exactly one (1) sheet, one (1) blanket, one (1) pillow, and one (1) body pillow is required.
  • A mobile.
If even one of the above criteria is not met, I will not sleep even an instant for the whole night. Sometimes even these things don't work though, in which case I need actual human contact, or to carry out item #4 on Shadowfox's list.

What do you think about?
Usually death or something.

Also nobody probably wants to hear about the dream I had last night about the "Pre-resurrection society of auto-cannibals" that I saw on the news.

I will say true to this day, what comes from the television/monitor effects my dreams moderately.

If by tiny you mean uneventful, a lot of them and I often forget them the instant I wake up like today.

Also, I don't think I've ever had a mirror in any of my dreams to this date.
I mean I've had dreams based on actual locations like my bathroom, but the mirror was far less important than what was lol
Bam confirmed for eternal insomniac, although I understand having a glass of milk but never drinking it. I do that with tea and freshly cooked meals (That smells really good, I wonder if I-zzzzzzzzzz)

How do you sleep at all!
Like a baby, in that I sleep very soundly but also wake up 2-3 times a night crying. It's also why I never did slumber parties.

I actually forgot three criteria, but they are the most important! Also they're really more preparatory measures/rituals (beyond daily hygienic routines) than environmental specifications:

  • I must be freshly bathed. If even the thinnest day residue coats my skin, I will feel horribly unclean and be unable to sleep. Plus, the womb-like quality of running water numbs my skin and makes me feel all dopey.
  • Hair brushing for the same reason/effect. I wish I had someone to brush my hair but sadly I do not live at an all-girls boarding school.
  • I must have recently ingested a dose of melatonin, upon which I have become dependent.
No need to thank me, really. I'm always happy to educate neurotypicals like you about the struggle.

I've never had a lucid dream but sleeping in a room with with a mirror makes me feel extremely uneasy. Mirrors in the dark are just really unsettling.

I remember reading something awhile back about how mirrors+darkness=bad for human beans
something about looking into a mirror in the dark causes people to vividly hallucinate, unfortunately all the hallucinations tend to be extremely horrifying
