Official Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth 'Discovery' Gameplay Trailer
who's ready for the closest thing we'll get to a sequel of alpha centauri?

i'm most excited for the non-linear tech tree. curious how multiplayer will work. anyone else pre-ordered yet?

Sef

I would've totally pre-ordered if I had the money to spend, but alas, I have not that kind of money.

Either way, there's no way I'm not getting this game and am mega-hyped. Especially if it bares fair resemblance to Alpha Centauri. (plus I'm always a sucker 4X games)

I'll be honest, I've got Civ 5, but it's hilariously complicated and while I really want to, I just don't feel like I have the time to learn how to play it. If this is anything like Civ 5 in terms of complexity, I'm out. It looks really cool though

rtil

@lionsef it will probably go on sale during the holidays

@crackers  it looks like it's going to be just as complex as civ 5 if not more . but i always thought the tutorial was pretty self-explanatory, it teaches you as you play. there's more to it than those basics but you learn quicker than you'd think

Kött

It looks interesting and I must say that I got used to the Normal Civ5 rather quickly, although I didn't like the series a couple of years ago...
I really like the idea about the different paths. Haven't pre-ordered it yet tho. Probably just gonna wait for a good deal on steam.

i once fell asleep playing civ, and its one of the few game on the list of 'purchases i regret'

so no i didnt preorder this new one i might get it in 7 years time when its like £4

alien isolation tho woo now theres an exciting prospect *rubs hands* *licks lips* *shifts uncomfortably*

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

I also look forward to going hard in the early game then getting super flustered in midgame like I do with ALL strategy games.

This is me with Soulstorm, quoted for the truth

BluPhoenix

for how long-term it is, games of civ usually seem worth the time put in, and always a blast with friends

pretty sure the non-linear tech tree will give lots of needed replayability

i'd say this could knock AA2 off the throne for goty 2014

in civ the early game is all about setting yourself up for the long term, which is usually just picking a strategy that benefits your civ, capitalizing on your surroundings and sticking with it. in previous civs it was usually based on what civ you picked, but in this game it doesn't seem like it matters who you are or that you even get to pick a leader to begin with, and you'll have more freedom to select your strategy based on your circumstances.. which actually poses a great advantage that random placement on a map would give you compared to previous entries.

i'm also curious to see how smart the AI is, since wandering barbarians are now much more powerful aliens that dominate the planet.

It'll be nice to have much more freedom in determining your civ's development and evolution through the tech tree. Hopefully it'll make repeat plays feel more intuitive. A huge problem some of my fave 4X games have is just a linear tech-tree route that's always the best option (I'm looking at you, Endless Space).

rtil

one nice thing about civ is that there's a lot more to the game than just the tech tree, but having a non-linear one that is supposed to be impossible to complete in a single game should make things even more interesting

I was wondering about this too, along with the apparent lack of city-states do to errands for

<+ansel> i lure children into my van with candy and then i read them passages from 'the origin of species'
<%ropesnake> billy con ends with billy raping his cat

the devs say the AI is smart now, but they said that about civ 5. it did get a lot better in BNW, but that was 2 expansions later.

Just like to bump this to say that i am now super hyped for this. Was so wrong to write off Civ 5, i've clocked up like 20 hours on it this week alone, crazy addictive

hahaha, that's how it goes

just out of interest what civ's do you guys play as most? i had a quick scroll through, and Poland looks so so broken but idk

rtil

some civs are broken vs the AI but not so much in pvp. best example is Venice. you will make fuckloads of gold vs the AI as Venice and be able to buy a very powerful civ and military because of trade routes. but vs people, everyone will just sabotage trade routes with you because they know you'll do this.

i like to play conquest style, so my favorite civ is Zulu. early aggression is rewarded with their UU and insane combat bonuses, putting you on a great footing for the mid to late game if you can conquer someone early.

Zulu are really cool, played against them earlier online, their early game is ridiculously strong, i only narrowly managed to survive due to city state alliances, and sheer luck

Probably can guess from that that I'm enjoying the diplomatic/cultural victory the most, usually achieved by having ridiculous amounts of faith. Not tried every race yet, but so far I'm enjoying Byzantium, Greece nah they're quite shit, the Celts are seriously good if a little niche, and Sweden (when you gift a great prophet with one use left to a city state to instantly become their ally? better feeling than sex)
