Premise: Most of Europe has been taken over by an alien invasion force called Mimics. The world's remaining nations band together to form the United Defense Force in an effort to repel the invasion and reclaim lost territory. Tom Cruise plays Major William Cage, a talking head who's only job is to drum up support for the war and sell it to the civilians on other continents. Two days before a major secret operation to take back France, Cage refuses his orders to man the front lines with a camera crew, is knocked out and stripped of his rank. He awakes the next day on the staging area as a Private at-risk for desertion. Upon landing on the battlefield, it becomes clear that the Mimics were aware the UDF was coming, and they slaughter everyone. As Cage lies dying in a ditch, he manages to take out one unusually large Mimic with him using explosives, showering himself with the Mimic's blood. He immediately wakes up the day before with his memory of the battle intact.

This is Groundhog Day + Starship Troopers, and it is fucking awesome.

Edge of Tomorrow - Official Main Trailer [HD]

I just got back from the premiere and I really, really enjoyed this film, enough to say it's one of my favorite sci-fi movies in recent memory. After coming away slightly underwhelmed by Looper, Cloud Atlas, Prometheus and Godzilla, I was delighted to find that Hollywood managed to completely satisfy my sci-fi itch with this one. Of course, they changed a bit from the manga for American audiences, but nothing really egregious (having an adult male scientist instead of a japanese schoolgirl one for example). I highly recommend watching this movie and then picking up the manga if you haven't already, since the manga gives you a closer look at the characters that hollywood couldn't squeeze into a 120 minute runtime. Or, you can pick up the original lightnovel in english, although light novels aren't really my thing so I haven't read it yet.

I find it intriguing despite there being a few things that irk me about it, I might go check it out.

Yeah I know how you feel. I was especially worried since Oblivion was panned by critics (haven't seen it yet). I think the io9 review put it best though that this is a role Cruise was made for. He's a an incompetent coward at the start, and grows to become a badass not because he's Tom Cruise, but because he spends a lifetime struggling on the battlefield. He's actually really likeable in this movie, it's kind of a return to form. I'd say rent it if you don't feel like seeing it in theatres.

Edit: I should also mention that Emily Blunt was both lovely and tough as nails in her role as Rita. She may not be as "kawaii" as the manga version but she definitely fit the character well.

I saw this yesterday. The screenplay was really well written, the acting was fantastic, and the action scenes were all really well done.

I would see this again
