I have been playing this game and it makes me think of how I don't have any friends, and how much fun it would be to have friends.
Regardless, I have to say it is pretty fun.

Any of you had the chance play the game too? Thoughts? Anybody thinking of setting up a server?

slack

i think a server would be cool

minecraft was shite i have 100 reasons why i hate it

terraria was actually kind of fun with friends unlike minecraft

starbound hopefully will continue the tradition of being a vaguely playable game unlike minecraft

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

Stu4U

sure i'll try it out why not.

slack

hey me and systech have built many a thing in minecraft smp

Stu4U

can you actually build/fly spacecraft in this or is it just glorified mudhuts 2.0 like terraria

if so what are the key differences which set it apart from/make it better than terraria

i already know it's not minecraft (THANK FUCKING GOD) but does it have merits of its own

is the multiplayer easy to set up with functional servers (unlike terraria)

better still does it use steamworks

everybody loves steamworks if not FUCK you

i can answer some of these as i have been playing it non-stop for the past day or so. you cant completely build spaceships(thats coming later) but right now you can customize the insides.

the servers are really easy to set up from what i know.

in terms of this vs terraria starbound actually has a lot more going for it. i mean its the same general type but there are a lot more elements to it. i get a kick out of just how many items and blocks there are in the world. on top of that the books in game are actually kinda fun to read (clever in universe whatnot. i remember the korlex delusion as a take on "the god delusion")

it actually feels BIG for once, the universe is fucking giant and neat to explore.
idk i liked terraria for a while so my commentary is kinda built with a disposition to liking the game.

(oh and no it doesnt use steamworks. idk if it will in the future but the files are easy enough to edit anyway)

Sinitron

steamworks for mp, not mods

"lots more blocks" isn't a big thing, keep in mind terraria was only more fun than minecraft because there was actually shit to do not just because you had the freedom to make phallic towers of male superiority or whatever the hell people play minecraft to do

is it "big" in the sense that you need to build hellevators and shit or is there actually a world to explore/generate beyond the constraints of the initial map

also your sense of big might be bullshit to me since most of the games i play are on a large scale

i mean i even think planetside seems kind of small

well you can go to other planets, all of which are pretty big. basically a whole fuck ton of planets. also there is shit to do like terraria. perhaps more shit than terraria.

i feel like this game a bit more than terraria in space, more the spiritual successor to terraria

in the same way bioshock was to system shock

the planets are all randomly generated, and essentially you can keep travelling to new ones so in the "exploration" sense its probably endless

essentially the world seems huge at first because you're using a pickaxe made of twigs to dig with, therefore progress is slow and difficult. with later levels and expansions it looks like you'll be able to carve through planets at lightning speed + tons and tons of stuff to unlock/discover/build

also lots of universe backstory garbage to discover, if you're into that kind of thing
