As some of you may be aware, the third season of Hajime no Ippo aired sometime back. For those of you who are unfamiliar (trying to give as little spoilers as possible) it's an transformation story at it's heart, where a meek and timid underdog's bullies end up becoming his greatest supporters as he scales the Japanese rankings in boxing, all while he tries to understand what it truly means to be strong. The actual animation quality is pretty decent, but where it's strengths lie are in it's host of amiable characters. Every single one of Ippo's opponents faces as many difficulties as he does, and as the audience you can't help but feeling slightly partial to both parties. Also features more side plots than I've had hot dinners (and I've had a lot)

As a reader of the manga, I can't say I don't feel a little frustrated at the lack of development in some crucial parts of the anime. Some of the fight scenes especially suffer from this (the third series is particularly bad for this, Shimbakuro is basically relegated to make time for the Sawamura bout).

Reading this you'd probably thing, "Wow 'pre-match chat - match - another intermission before match - match -...' formula might get old, fast" but trust me, it doesn't. The last thing you'll be is bored by it especially when there's Takamura about oh my god.

You'd be advised to watch the first couple series before checking out the newest season. Episode eight just aired. Discuss?

3 episode rule man, 3 episode rule. also pray tell who told you so i can copulate with them. also there is plenty of tongue-in-cheek, so much tongue in cheek you can't speak properly (eg. every non major fight in the series)

I know exactly where you're coming from, its fairly unusual to say the least, and the characters aren't conventionally 'pretty' or 'easy on the eye' (that was my biggest initial gripe with the design). The animation quality is pretty dated compared to more recent animes, but it's not too bad considering it was made 13 years ago!

i'll admit it takes a while to get going, three episode rule guys!

exactly the same as me, i'm on my third run through the first haha. in my opinion i thought season two was pretty decent, especially the Hammer Nao bout (one of the favourite in the series, 'SORAAAAAHH PREXUS BROWWWW'), so this will probably be a little biased. At the moment, the third season hasn't been bad at all, although it hasn't really met my expectations either. Some bits feel a little rushed (the Aoki title fight especially), I presume that's because they're going to put all their efforts into the main fights of these chapters - Takamura vs David Eagle and Ippo vs Sawamura. ALSO we get to see the story of Coach Kawogama and Nekota in their youth, which (if you haven't read the manga) is definitely one of the best parts of all the 1000 chapters there are so far.

Yeah, I'd watch season 2 again. Once you get over the art style it's actually really good.
If the original series was a 9/10
and new challenger was a 7.5
Rising is a solid 7/10 at the moment, but I expect it to go up to at least a 9 if they don't fuck up the plot drastically.

hate to double post but episode 8 just aired. Third series is really starting to pick up now, and we get treated to a nice return of a fan favourite, what could be better?!?

don't mean to double post but the series has just resumed after a 2 week break

Episode 11 [spoiler] after a lot of build up, we are treated to the first of what I will assume will take over 3 episodes: The Sawamura (Deathblow Dragon) vs Ippo bout. This is a lot of people's favourite fight in the series because Sawamura appeals to emo fags is an angsty teen with daddy issues like every other male in the series, but the anime seems to make him even more psycho (AKA, a joke). If they keep missing out vital parts of character development like this I will cry [/spoiler]
