hey guys, lately i've been on a big search for independent/underground/cult animated films, or just films with different and exciting art styles. i love movies and i'm trying to explore this particular kind of animated movie that you have to be looking for to hear about it.
i'm talking about stuff like dead leaves, angel's egg, mind game etc. - stuff you don't normally hear about, at least not over here. examples of western movies like this are also welcome.

Mind Game, 2004, Masaaki Yuasa - Trailer

^by the way this movie is amazing

Japan has always been pretty good at pulling the most random things they can think of out of their rump

I'm sure everyone knows about him, but from the top of my head, Don Hertzfeldt is a pretty awesome independent animator, in my opinion. In particular, his more recent works such as Wisdom Teeth are pretty grand.

If you fancied Dead Leaves and Mind Game, Hells Angels is worth checking out. I.G., 4C and Madhouse have a lot of "different" projects in their repertoires. Most of them are fairly enjoyable depending on your transmarginal inhibition.

I remember mentioning Angel's Egg in the IRC a few months ago and someone watching it. If you can tolerate that, you can endure anything by Oshii, even Beautiful Dreamer. Another movie released the same year which you might also enjoy is called Night on the Galactic Railroad.

I don't know a lot of Western features. The Thief and the Cobbler and The King and the Mockingbird are "different" in that both of them had extremely drawn out production periods. There's another Frenchman named Rene Laloux whose movies were quite "different" as well. I'd recommend looking up the list Laputa Animation Festival compiled of the "best animated movies ever." They probably know what they're talking about more than I do.

that was probably me you talked to on irc some time ago, thanks for the suggestions!
angel's egg is very slow-paced and contempaltive but when you're in the mood for that sort of film it tends to have a bigger impact on you than movies usually have... in my experience, at least.

also seannyj, i watched redline last week and it is really fucking stunningly pretty! i always thought your gifs and sigs were from "sakuga" moments or whatever but nah, the whole movie looks great

Aye, Redline was indeed very nicely animated and had some neat character designs. Admittedly though, I think the premise was kind of weak in comparison. I think it was a bit style over substance. However, I would otherwise recommend watching it because as aforementioned, aesthetically it's wonderful.

Style is substance.

redline is one of those movies where you don't really give a shit about the plot

you just want to see motherfuckers race

Tardigrade

Eh, I guess that's true. That's not to say I disliked Redline, perhaps plot-wise it just wasn't really my thing.

Also, on topic-John Weldon produced some pretty interesting animated short films; here's an example of his work.

I really like The Triplets of Belleville.
even though the story itself is pretty slow, it's got some awesomely animated scenes.

I thought they made it pretty clear in the ad campaign for Redline that the 7 year production period was the plot.

It would be a bit of a stretch to call those two "animated". Nevertheless, they definitely fit the "different" criterion.
