I never really liked mewtwo or lucario anyway. Im excited about the wii fit trainer because she seems like a light, agile character like sheik, or zero suit samus. Im also stoked that this game is going to be "in between brawl and melee" in speed, and they've also gotten rid of random tripping which was just a dumb mechanic.

so what are they

there's actually been a lot of heated debate about this. i think when people say this they mean it is not a fighting game in the traditional sense. it can't be put in the same category as games like street fighter, tekken, soul caliber, etc. even though it does show up in the pro scene, there's usually a lot of rules involved (no items, certain characters banned, etc). it is isn't balanced and nintendo never intended it for that. it is a party game and a brawler game, but not a "traditional" fighting game.

Well, from that interview with Kotaku, it's good to know that Sakurai intends for SSB4 to be more like Melee and less like Brawl. I can see his reasoning for making Brawl more accessible to casual players, but I'm glad that he appreciates the thrill of a faster, more competitive game. I never knew he took first in a fairly large Street Fighter II tournament in the 90's. That's kind of awesome, it means he knows his stuff when it comes to more "traditional" fighting games.

its also interesting that there aren't really any other games like it (besides playstation all-stars now), a mix between a party game and a fighting game is definitely a good way to describe it. Im surprised there haven't more people making games in the ssb style since it has been so successful on its own.

was playstation all stars any good, just seeing big daddy in a fighter made me squee

i guess it'd be very very obvious if another game was made in the same vein/style as brawl, because it is a relatively unique style
and then immediately you have people comparing this hypothetical new game to brawl, so itd kinda have to be bulletproof to survive

playstation all stars was a bit different from smash bros, I tried playing it for like 30 mins and it just bothered me how the controls and stuff weren't the same as smash, so I didn't end up getting used to it or buying a copy of the game. i heard it was decent but not as good as smash.

what about power stone 1 & 2? they're old but they are arena brawlers with multiplayer as the focus

It's pretty weird. The mechanics are really different: basically, the only point of the game is to build up meter for a finishing move, since that's the only way to kill people. It has combos and the like, but it feels even more like a party game than Smash does. My local fighting game community doesn't take it very seriously. I was really excited by the roster too. It's just another example of Sony having the ambition but not the ability to match Nintendo's design.

And I can think of quite a few games like Smash that came before and after it. The Power Stone games are a great example, it was an incredibly fun series from the Dreamcast days that had "original" characters. Just like PSASBR though, it pretty much amounted to whoever could get their super moves first. Imagine Brawl without the ability to turn Smash Balls off.

THE POWERSTONE WARS! Episode 5 - GET OUT!

There was Onimusha Blade Warriors, which pretty much ripped their character select screen straight from Melee. It was pretty boring though, felt really clunky:

Nintendo hasn't done anything with this franchise since 2006, but Custom Robo is another Fighting/Party game for up to four players. It was also pretty boring, and the single-player campaign played out like a predictable, cheesy 90's mecha anime.

Versus Mode: Single Battle 3-Set Match, P1 (ME) Vs. P2 (Seank) , Custom Robo [HD]

Even Sonic tried to get in on it with Sonic Battle, where most people get their sprites from for animation. Being a GBA game the mechanics were really limited, which made the campaign feel like bashing my head into a wall repeatedly.

Let's Look at Sonic Battle!

arghh ive always meant to get round to buying a powerstone game somehow
also jesus wow im sure i have a copy of sonic battle for the gba somewhere here maybe i hid it away

yeh i guess the point i was trying to make was that although there are other games out there in a similar style, and possibly even better quality in some ways, they will still be compared to brawl.
because for quite a few people (im assuming my generation) that is either all they know, or their favorite by far

kinda the same way every scrub will compare an fps to CoD no matter what
once saw a comment war where some guy tried to claim Goldeneye 007 was a CoD ripoff made me cry

There is no way I'm going to believe that wasn't a troll post.

I recently picked up Counter-Strike having never really played it and honestly I'd say most FPS owe a lot to this one. Call of Duty especially. Aside from straight stealing the Gun-Game game type, I had always wondered why certain guns were included in CoD despite not really being "relevant" to the era the campaign takes place in. It might be because they feature prominently in CS.

rtil

battlefield also recently ripped off gun game. they didn't even try to hide it - the game mode is called "gun game"

soup

kid was like every other 7yr old on youtube and had no idea what goldeneye was
clearly

the only other explanation i can come up with is that they're in there for gameplay balance maybe. for me each CoD has always been the same game, just with a different era or theme slapped on each time. kudos to the first few, but now it annoys me.

i stopped playing battlefield 3 soon after xbox server host update because it got a bit buggy
also kept getting stuck in french servers who would kick us for using c4 on the helicopters

Considered mentioning powerstone but powerstone is so different from smash bros because it's 3d. Also like you said it's old and im surprised that nobody has tried to make more games in the style of smash bros (or powerstone for that matter) in the past 10 years.

ah shit. they're definitely gonna add some other final fantasy character but they don't have a lot of good ones to choose from when you think about ff games on nintendo consoles. i've never played final fantasy though so i don't actually know anything. maybe they'll put in the guy from chrono trigger.

I think you might be missing the point

That's definitely not a Cactuar, it's a Gyroid from the Animal Crossing series the stage is based on.
