holy SHIT i am loving this album so far. even if you dont like kanye id recommend checking it out before just dismissing it. hudson mohawke, daft punk, and some others contributed to it. the first two tracks are incredible, im really impressed so far, like nothing ive heard before.

<~rtil> oh it's a kanye west album
<~rtil> gross

to be honest, it is impossible for me to listen to kanye west without associating his ego with it. he is one of the most disgustingly self-centered and self-important people i've ever seen and because of that it has ruined any chance at me being able to enjoy his music. so, his music sounds terrible to me and i actively avoid it.

creamcorn

i partly agree with rtil. you have to ignore all his egomaniacal shit in order to appreciate his music, which is a LOT to ignore. i mean look at this: Kanye West - POWER

, plus one of the songs on this album is called I Am A God

BUT if you do ignore all that, theres tracks like Blood on the Leaves which is awesome

imho that's a disappointingly closed minded decision of you to make. i don't think kanye is entirely self-centered by any means. sure he can come off as narcissistic in lots of interviews and shit, sure he gets a lot of bad press, sure he does/says a lot of dumb/amusing stuff (which he usually ends up apologizing for), sure he definitely makes a big deal about his ego but thats part of his act. you don't have to take kanye west seriously to enjoy the product he puts out (both his music and his hilarious antics that i'm sure you're more familiar with). I used to be a kanye hater but once i started paying a little more attention to him i realized he's not such a bad guy. he's not god, but he definitely makes good music (in my opinion). also, this album was hyped as fuck and honestly i'm really impressed with the outcome, I didn't expect it to be nearly this good.

and i'm not asking you to like the album or even give kanye a second chance, but I just think it's silly that you HAVE to associate his ego with his music and automatically hate it.

rtil

how can i not separate the two now that i know? when i listen to something i know consciously who made it, and i automatically associate their voice with that person. it can't be helped.

this is actually why i try not to learn about an artist or musician that i like, because they often turn out to be huge douchebags and that ruins their work for me. and that's what happened with kanye west.

it doesn't help that i'm not a fan of hip hop to begin with. and maybe i am close minded about music and have shit taste, but i honestly don't care. i listen to what sounds pleasing to my own ears and i'm not going to pretend to like other kinds of music or force myself to listen to music that people say i should like. maybe kanye is just an act but i honestly doubt it. his egocentric demeanor seems to be pretty run-of-the-mill behavior in the hip hop community. i don't appreciate what they sing about and i don't appreciate them as people, and therefore cannot appreciate them as artists.

as an artist myself i try to be humble about what i do. i appreciate people who like my work and do my best to show respect to everyone who does likewise. if there is one thing i cannot stand it is an artist who takes every opportunity they can to be the center of attention and act like they are so goddamn important because of their popularity. it's pathetic behavior and sets a bad example for everyone. so in that sense i have no respect for kanye west and - while i don't wish anything bad on him - by his actions, he does not warrant any.

RichChap

You can totally think what you want, again I'm not expecting you to try to enjoy his music and it's not the kind of thing I would expect you to love anyway. Its not easy for most people to separate the image of the artist from their music, especially if you don't respect them as a person, but for me it just seems kind of silly. If someone is making something that strikes my interest, and is pleasing to me, I usually can make myself enjoy it even if I don't like the person behind it. But I'm not you so I wouldn't expect you to act the same way, especially since I know a lot of people can't do that. It still seems kind of silly to me though but I respect your decision and I'm really curious what everyone else is going to think about this album.

Flash

i don't understand why everybody thinks kanye west is so awesome. i haven't listened to a whole lot of his work, but from what i know, his flow is really bad, his lyrics suck and the only thing he gets right is where to steal cool samples from.

(ok tbh, some of the beats in his songs sound pretty cool - especially those oldschool style ones - but i don't even know if he's the one who makes them)

i listen to a reasonable amount of hip-hop, mostly older stuff and the roots, and they're all miles away from kanye (also from jay z and eminem and whatever the fuck mtv thinks is the shit)

i guess that is the big difference between you and i. i just can't separate the two. i'd have to pretend it was a different person or something , and i can't fool myself.

i actually do this with daft punk.. but that's because they put on robot heads. maybe it's because i'm a very visual person. maybe if kanye had some sort of alter-ego that was an animated character i wouldn't have this problem.

RichChap

ive never been one to really listen to hiphop lyrics excessively. the only actual rapper i've ever been a big fan of is biggie. i'm really into the production side of hiphop though and that's easily the strongest point of this album. I have to say though I really don't mind kanye's verses, and some of the lyrics are pretty clever, but I usually have a hard time keeping up with actual rap.

get ready to be disappointed immediately because "i am a god" is flat-out fucking weird and it then the album chokes the fuck up in the middle. i don't understand why ANYONE thought having bon iver and chief keef on a track together was a good idea, but "hold my liquor" is pretty awful. for an album that was touted as being ultra minimalistic, it sure is cluttered and noisy all over the place. it's got some solid stuff on there though- bound 2 is some oldskool college dropout shit and is fantastic. i need to spend some more time with it, but i am pretty underwhelmed after a first listen.

lol chicken, you've changed bud! i remember when you used to be completely unable to listen to any rap because you hated the idea of projecting your ego like that

i think you are missing the point!
rtil can't seperate kanye's personality from his music because doing that is fuckin IMPOSSIBLE. you would have to be deaf to be able to disassociate kanye's personality/ ego from his music. he's a rapper for fuck's sake, lol. his music IS his personality. plus, his ego gives him this ambition that has driven him to keep reinventing his sound and push himself. i mean, that is literally the thing that separates kanye from every other popular musician at the moment- every album he puts out, he puts all of himself in there, the good and the bad. he's gotten popular without compromising artistry/ experimentation/ honesty and that is pretty commendable in an industry that rewards homogeneity and "playing it safe".

tbh i think you should try being a little less hard on people dude! i am not saying that i don't know exactly where you are coming from @ kanye, but you claim that "often" find out that musicians you like are dicks and stop listening to em? sorry, but damn.

aw jeez man
i don't know how you can say you listen to a reasonable amount of hiphop and the roots and shit and have this opinion about all of these peo-
...
well, scratch that. eminem has fallen off and started making pop hits and jay has been pretty boring for a while now. but really!!! don't hate them because they're popular and on mtv and stuff. eminem and jay both have some real gems in their catalog. i mean, shit, as long as you're a fan, why don't you check out the live album that the roots did backing up jay-z in 2001

Jay-Z ( UN Plugged n.2.0) Izzo (H.O.V.A)

and man i have no clue how you can say kanye's flow or lyrics are bad. he isn't like the most technically proficient rapper EVER but come on dude

you don't have to offer a sheepish justification as to why you are tolerating kanye west's lyrics/ rap in general when a bunch of people are telling you that they don't like him. you are allowed to enjoy it for what it is. i promise.  :stork:

alright, so maybe that is an exaggeration. but as it turns out, most music that i don't like to begin with tends to come as a package deal with an asshole artist. but as for you suggesting that i be a "little less hard on people", um.. sorry, but no. i don't have time for bullshit. let's be honest here - most people don't know how to deal with fame. popularity happens overnight for those that experience it, and barely anyone takes it in stride. can they be blamed for that? no. but there are people who are capable of not becoming complete jackoffs with a sense of superiority over their fans, or at least can have the audacity to apologize for their mistakes when they make them.

there is a reason i don't work with people in the industry who rub me the wrong way. i have had too many negative experiences with special snowflakes who think they are god's gift to mankind, and the warning signs are always right there in your face the minute you meet them. i can see these qualities in people and i am never wrong (at least i haven't been yet).   so i treat people the same way both directly and indirectly. i don't care how good your art or your music is. if you treat people like shit, i wont' give you my business or my time.

Alta Don

I honestly don't give a flying fuck if an artist is a douchebag. If anything, most famous musicians are. John Lennon was. Kurt Cobain was. If I like the music, I like the music. I honestly love how Kanye West is completely cocky on his tracks because he's actually witty & humorous with it (unlike most radio rappers like Rick Ross & Drake who just flat out talk about how much better they are than you and then leave) and Kanye West is 100% honest in his music. We all know how much of an ego Kanye has and he uses this ego as an advantage. Look at an artist like Chris Brown. Horrible person. And in his music, he acts like this innocent lover who questions why girls don't treat him right. His music  is heavily criticized for trying to make shitty love songs about him being the victim. And for good reason. Kanye West's music however is all honest (and on top of that, has outstanding production).

As for Yeezus, I dug it but I wasn't mind-blown compared to his last efforts. I love the tracks Black Skinhead, New Slaves, Guilt Trip & Bound 2. But the biggest highlight was Blood On The Leaves which might be the most epic sounding R&B song I have heard this year. I only wished that the intro song actually sounded like an "intro" track and it could of had less crappy Chief Keef singing. I wouldn't recommend this album to someone who wants to get into Kanye West (or for that matter, someone who is trying to get into rap) but I still enjoyed it as a Kanye West fan.

either you have really low standards for wit and humor or i'm missing something here because almost every kanye song i have heard directly relates to himself and how great he is

It's a matter of opinion. I personally find him to be hilarious and at sometimes even clever. However, I feel the same way but with artists like Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, etc. who flat out just talk about how much better they are without saying anything funny, witty & thought provoking. These brag rappers don't even provide any delivery or form of energy in their music. If you don't like Kanye's music, thats fine but I wouldn't even dare place him in that section of rappers where they record a verse for 50k and then leave the studio. Because unlike them, Kanye West knows how to write & produce an entire song.

not a justification, just how i listen to hip hop, for the producers, not for the rappers. I didn't even say I was "tolerating" kanye's lyrics because of the beats, I literally said I thought his lyrics were clever, but in 90% of rap i can't pay attention to what the hell anyone is saying.

despite that "i am god" and "hold my liquor" weren't tracks im ever going to listen to again, there were still a lot more tracks I liked on the album than the first two and overall I would not say I was disappointed, maybe because I went in with low expectations.

also I get why everyone is comparing this to death grips but you really can't make that claim besides the for the first track maybe and the overall dark and gritty feel of the album. im sure it influenced kanye slightly but the first two tracks i still think are really unique, as is the album as a whole. also just the fact that its produced by daft punk and hudson mohawke ... i feel like that inherently makes it less silly/little than death grips. not that i have a problem with death grips, i just can't really compare the two.
