Ryoko the space pirate was controlled by Kagato through three red power gems until Yosho, Tenchi's grandfather and first prince of Jurai, sealed her in a cave using his lightsaber.

Using one of Washu's mysterious gems of power, Kagato controlled Ryoko after sealing Washu inside her own ship, attacking many planets throughout the universe. He came very close to his ultimate goal - defeating the Juraian royalty - when Juraian Prince Yosho of Jurai chased Ryoko all the way to Earth, lured her into a cave and sealed her there. She was trapped there for 700 years until Tenchi, against the advice of his grandfather (Yosho), entered the cave and unwittingly released her.

There are three different tenchi series/universes if i remember correctly.

correct. there is tenchi muyo! ryo-ohki the original 20-some episode series, which is by far the best. then there is tenchi in tokyo, where tenchi goes to study in tokyo and has a girlfriend, but the girls follow him there and wacky shenanigans ensue. nothing really important happens.. it's ok. then there is tenchi universe, a slightly less serious and small twists of retelling the original series.

there are 3 films as well as tons of spinoffs in alternate universes. none of them are really worth mentioning except pretty sammy magical project s.
