i think stu brings up good points about idealization of body image in art, and the fact that some people get really caught up in it and think that artists are trying to send a message to girls or boys about what they should look like or what role they are supposed to fit in society, when the reality is that most artist draw the way they do simply because they like to. they shouldn't be held to any politically correct standard about what is and isn't ok to draw and how to draw it. to be jealous, spiteful or envious of a fictional character is a little ridiculous.

in the end, we all have diverse opinions and tastes, it's what makes us people and not clones. if someone wants to share those particular tastes with others, then there should obviously be an outlet. the reason the hentai thread was a big deal is mainly out of many users dislikes(or ideals) conflicting with other users in the thread's likes(or ideals). it's no different from any topic in the entertainment subforum in the sense that people take the existing product(s) after viewing/using/playing and share their thoughts or similar products. are the items mentioned the product of their artists? but of course. are the works considered art? probably, it depends on what the viewer thinks. does it contain explicit imagery? yeah man, that's why there's an NSFW tag.

if you're not embarrassed to show off what makes your engine purr, by all means, post it. so long as it has the audience you're comfortable with, and it isn't disturbing or twisted, it's all good. granted the audience you attract also includes predictable antagonists (i.e. sin, et al.), the thread will stand it's ground so long as you or your neighboring audience continues to support it.
