I wonder if there's a way to see how well they did with ratings. I'm sure I could figure out with some light googling, but eh

Thanks to all who watched #toonami ! We won't know ratings until Tues or Wed, and even then, it's going to take longer than a week.

P&S dub is perfect, gtfo

you're right i'm sorry panty saying fuck every time she talks is so genius

and that's different in the jap version how

because in the japanese version it's mangled english for comedic purposes

I'm sorry, but that's the only thing that makes a few episodes in the original version somewhat "hurhur". Although it was visually appealing, the show itself wasn't very funny, and FUNimation did a great job with turning its shit script into gold.

naturally

do scanty and kneesocks still roll their r's?

sev

they're not in it yet

i didn't say funimation's dub was bad or that the original was funnier. i just said panty's swearing isn't as amusing.

Premieres are in bold.

Also worth noting that Bleach and Deadman Wonderland got higher ratings than Sunday's premiere of Metalocalypse (807,000) and the whole of Toonami 12-3am got higher ratings than Sunday's new The Eric Andre Show (588,000).
(source: [1] http://sonofthebronx.blogspot.com/2012/06/adult-swim-ratings-may-21-27-2012.html)

seems like a fairly solid premiere, especially for a holiday weekend dominated by sports. hopefully tomorrow will be even stronger.

Of course, Bleach lol. GITS is still that popular huh? Surprising.

naturally

i'm more surprised that bleach is that popular. i would've thought that after the manga got cancelled it would've died down.

BluPhoenix

deadman wonderland has given me a solid reason to be excited for every new toonami

Damn... they actually dubbed Deadman Wonderland?
Deadman Wonderland was pretty mediocre in my opinion... It was based on a good idea and the art as well as the animation was pretty nice but they kinda revert back into old and stale concepts quite quickly and the show neither has any hidden meanings nor a good conclusion.
I'm not sure why on earth they would air something like that rather than Madoka, Angel Beats or Ef, all of which even have a decent dub.

Actually, that excludes Madoka as the dub is not finished yet and also pretty damn bad. To be accurate, it's quite a shame that Toonami hasn't acquired that one instead, as the dub would probably have been way more professional and it would have been a great chance for them to introduce something a little less mainstream to the general audience...

wait

you just said madoka has a decent dub and then said it has a pretty damn bad dub

which is it

To be honest I think Deadman Wonderland is a much better fit for Toonami over madoka or angel beats (don't know much about ef). If you haven't already noticed, it's rare for Toonami (or the old Adult Swim stuff) to show things set in high schools, or with lots of loli-esque character designs and that kind of thing. The genre of more 'manly' violence seems to be their thing when you look at the rest of their line up, they go for series that should be automatically accepted by an American audience. As a long time anime watcher, even I was turned off from madoka for these kinds of things.

I'm sure they've aired a few exceptions at some point, but generally speaking I think this is their trend.

rtil

i think kott might mean that toonami should have dubbed it or something i'm not sure.. if that is the case then cartoon network/turner/toonami does not dub stuff they just purchase airing rights for shows. funimation pretty much dubs everything that you'd see on toonami. usually their dubs are pretty good but not always

Well, yeah... actually I was just trying to list some of the better recent shows while I noticed that most of these actually had dubbed. After that I pretty much  screwed up my structure so I could rant about the Madoka dub...
But I think cipher is right about this one... the general theme of these shows probably is not as typical for the general audience as action oriented shows such as Deadman wonderland.
However, Madoka as well as Angel Beats do contain their fair share of action and violence and taking that albino girl in her bodysuit from Deadman Wonderland into account, I wouldn't really say that either, Angel Beats or Madoka have more loli/fanservice elements.
Ef, on the other hand, would pretty much be the oposite of this typical type of shows aired on Toonami (considering you assumotion is correct as I simply cannot judge it). Nevertheless, it would be a nice experimental choice for something new and that goes for Madoka and Angel Beats as well.
Finally, regarding the ratings on imdb, even less "manly" shows such as K-On, Angel Beats and Ef seem to be enjoyed more by a male audience so I definitely think it would be a nice idea to break the traditions by giving it a try, at least with one of those 'hybrid' shows that manage to find a decent balance of action and drama.

Angel Beats - because it's a drama disguised as a silly comedy/fighting anime
Madoka - because its something pretty gritty disguised as something innocent and cute (basically the other way around)
Ef - ...ok, this one doesn't relly fit the bill but it's one of the most mature animes that I have ever watched

Sorry, I'm pretty bad when it comes to the American entertainment industry... Germany has an entirely different CN/Adult Swim and I don't even have that channel. Of course, I mean Funimation. It didn't even take long until they dubbed Madoka in English as well as in German but unfortunately for both versions the voiceactors are completely miscast and I find it simply annoying that some of my favorites are ruined for entire markets because the professional companies rather focus on shows with themes that are more popular among the general audiences than trying out something now because the American market is pretty much flooded with Dragon Ball, Bleach and Naruto -esque stuff...

I see what you're getting at, but I feel like it's a little early in game to take "risks" with these kinds of shows. If they were to do it, they should probably wait at least a few months until they know Toonami has a dedicated following. That's when they can attempt to mix something new in.
