the response to this actually belongs in the thread of good, but the thing it's responding to definitely belongs here. sam posted this in the irc last night
Memorandum on "Protecting Women's Rights in Japan" by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, particularly the section that recommends prohibiting of the sale of video games or manga depicting sexual violence

basically as part of the UN's efforts to end discrimination and violence against women, CEDAW thinks it's a good idea to ban the sale of any media that depicts sexual violence against women. this response is from 40 Japanese women in the art and games industry arguing that banning the depiction of sexual violence against fictional women does nothing to protect real women and does more harm than good. i'm inclined to agree - especially considering the fact that the Japanese government is threatening to do enough damage to the freedom of artistic expression due to the 2020 Olympics conflicting with Comiket.

the UN is also interested in investigating and policing women's rights issues in Japan. considering the fact that countries like Saudia Arabia and the UAE are on the UN Human Rights Council, the UN claiming to be an authority figure on discrimination against women is a joke. that and they're just straight up wrong.

Among the possible issues for discussion between CEDAW and a delegation from the Japanese Government are:  Banning the sale of video games or cartoons involving sexual violence against women; employment equality, illegal dismissal of women due to pregnancy and childbirth; sexual harassment in the workplace; reintegration into school textbooks of issue of "comfort women";  compensation for women with disabilities sterilised against their will; effect on women, particularly pregnant women,  of health programmes introduced after the Fukushima nuclear disaster; difference in pension benefits for men and women, poverty among older women.

It's so stupid that was first on the list. Here's hoping they don't throw out the baby with the bathwater though, because all those other issues would be rightfully addressed.

I also want to say I genuinely sympathize with your anxiety over European cultural preservation. I don't think you make a great case of Japan being a major threat though.

You also must know, and I say this as a fan of your work, that many of the pieces you've posted in your art thread would be unpublishable under stricter legislation regarding violence, specifically that toward women. Just because you make images like these doesn't mean your empathy is necessarily all with the mutilator. You're a great illustrator and, personally, I think it would be a damn shame if people who don't understand had the power to decide what you're allowed to publish.

today somebody did their university presentation on video games. They talked for 5 mins about how much of a big shot indie developer they are by showcasing a poorly made rpg maker game they had cobbled together in their spare time.

then they talked for almost 30 mins about how great five nights at freddies, undertale and the witches house are. i wanted to die. i have never wanted to leave a room more than that moment. they were hailing fnaf as a pinnacle of gaming achievement with its stunning graphics. they were getting emotional talking about undertale. i had sunk so far into my chair i was practically lying on the floor.

the only thing i gathered from the presentation was its more than likely people like her who make up the majority of the terrible oversaturated indie game scene
