Why is it just yaoi though? I never understood.
i don't know about the large amounts of bad art but as for 'yaoi hands' i've heard the theory that women who draw yaoi tend to fixate on the beauty of hands and so they have a habit of 'getting lost' in drawing hands and accentuating them to the point where they become much too large. and i suppose that can partially lend itself to the fact the the art becomes so warped consequently makes it worse. i think for a lot of them it's more about certain parts of the body and not how the body connects as a whole, and a couple people started doing it and others were inspired by those artists and borrowed the same flawed anatomical concepts and it kind of spread like a virus. although this is only based on how i see art trends develop in certain circles and i have no way of proving it, it is only my speculation.

it only seems to be in manga and doujin, though. i have seen my fair share of well drawn BL on tumblr and pixiv , there are many very talented female artists who have a great grasp on anatomy and draw yaoi.

Androphiles probably see the average 90's anime woman the same way.

I'm sure it's not women drawing it but rather Japan's probable backwards view of what women may or may not like. If it were the case that women were to "get lost" drawing hands, then I'm sure every male hentai artist would be drawing vaginas bigger than their mega large oppai loli tits.
? most yaoi manga-ka are female. so they have a backwards view of themselves? and male hentai manga-ka have to censor vaginas, they usually overexaggerate the female form and the breasts, facial expressions, etc.

people like what people like. there is no such thing as a backwards view on your own fantasy.  you see common styles in art because artists gain inspiration and drive by admiring other artist's techniques. people like to exaggerate whatever appeals to that specific person, whether it's a part of someone's body or otherwise.

also regardless of censorship if you've never seen exaggerated genitals of all kinds on any gender i am genuinely surprised

There have been a few romance/ecchi manga i've seen where the anatomy is actually pretty realistic, but still sexy. Best example I can think of is I''s (aizu). i used to crush so hard on some of the chicks in that comic

I"s is a flipping masturpiece.

Still, I think it's kind of a silly assumption that female artists are being hypnotized by their own drawings of hands.
you're taking what i said in completely the wrong way. i'm kind of disappointed that you would assume that's what i meant. anyway, it's a common mistake all artists make regardless of their gender/sexuality/etc. getting lost in the details is a symptom of artists who don't step back often enough from their compositions to see the bigger picture, and then get anatomical proportions wrong as a result. it reveals itself in the form of giant or tiny body parts , overly tall or short people.. really just depends on what the artist wants to accentuate and gets carried away with it.

take Captain Tsubasa, for example, by male manga-ka Yoichi Takahashi.

Really long legs, tiny heads. Obviously, Takahashi is into accentuating the legs as it is an important part of how he sees people in his universe. But, he gets a little carried away and the proportions of the characters are obviously wrong and the anatomy breaks. i am not saying he's bad or that he's hypnotized by his own drawings, i am pointing out something millions of artists do all the time. I used to do it all the time with thighs, and now I do it with the backs of heads and hair. they're hard habits to break because it's hard to notice these things yourself unless someone else points it out.

while i don't have any objective proof as to why female yaoi manga-ka's tend to do this with hands, i don't think it's a silly assumption. i've spent a good 10 years of my life being around artists and i see this stuff every day. it's not belittling to point it out - it's how you improve as an artist because it's nice to have a pair of fresh eyes to observe something you may not be noticing that you are doing. a lot of artists don't have that, don't ask, or people just don't say anything, and the problem can become exacerbated over time.

that's the thing though, i didn't at the time. then i had to learn to tone it down. and, funnily enough, the reason i started doing it was because before that my characters didn't have any hips or waistline to speak of so i overcompensated.

Probably the average modern anime woman too if we take facial characteristics into account, as rtil mentioned.

Sheepy I love you but this seems kind of unintentionally racist. I guess that's a common problem though whenever certain aspects of Japanese culture are critiqued through the lens of western Feminist discourse (à la Kill la Kill thread, which I need to catch up on but am afraid to click because there are probably a million posts). I know that's not what you meant but I felt it needed to be said.

Also who the hell's attracted to vaginas? Those things are almost as scary as dicks!

^this^

also about all the explanations on how artists draw things anatomically, i'm pretty sure this is the same thing as stylizing right? personally, i think you can only stylize anatomy so much when it comes to anime, but its what makes other artists' work stand out from each other.

soup

at least a lot of successfully stylized work makes some anatomical sense

theres obviously a difference between purposefully exaggerating certain proportions, and having no fucking clue what you are doing/drawing

(there are also all the people that cling onto a "successful" exaggerated style because idk quick fame and success???  then they horribly mangle THAT style. aka mangling proportions that are already a bit wonky.)

yeah, but it's one of those things where in order to successfully break the rules you have to know how to follow them first. that's why, as soup is saying, you can have stylized anatomy that makes sense if you know where you can push the limits without breaking the illusion. but i think a lot of people do it because they don't know any better, and get defensive and use the "it's my style" excuse when, to put it bluntly, their "style" sucks.

Quote1 in 10 Americans think HTML is an STD, study finds

Besides HTML, there were some other amusing findings:
77% of respondents could not identify what SEO means. SEO stands for "Search-Engine Optimization"
27% identified "gigabyte" as an insect commonly found in South America. A gigabyte is a measurement unit for the storage capacity of an electronic device.
42% said they believed a "motherboard" was "the deck of a cruise ship." A motherboard is usually a circuit board that holds many of the key components of a computer.
23% thought an "MP3" was a "Star Wars" robot. It is actually an audio file.
18% identified "Blu-ray" as a marine animal. It is a disc format typically used to store high-definition videos.
15% said they believed "software" is comfortable clothing. Software is a general term for computer programs.
12% said "USB" is the acronym for a European country. In fact, USB is a type of connector.
