Actually, I think that these little pieces served as a form of comedic entertainment rather than being used as masturbation material...
Back then, it was a way to break the taboos, directed at a rather small underground audience who enjoyed the extraordinary, while today's consumption and production of drawn porn(erotic art in general reaches far beyond that and is way more popular, therefore I think it's hardly comparable.

I personally think that most people who visit places like these regularly have a somewhat biased opinion when it comes to topics like hentai.
It is a familiar concept that most of internet regulars have grown up with and have either come to tolerate or to enjoy, simply because of its high occurrence in the internet in general. It definitely feels more aesthetic than actual porn because it is completely based on imagination and not limited by certain factors, no one was harmed or defiled in its production and it is more appealing to our imagination as it is a simplified concept of reality. The most important point is that art can destroy or simply leave out the flaws that bother us about reality and that especially applies in this area.

On the other hand, drawn material that attempts to have an erotic appeal does seem awkward for those who don't get in contact with it on a regular base.
For hentai, especially certain mannerisms of the anime/manga style (way too big eyes, wacky hair colors, extremely simplified noses, mouths etc.) may seem weird to those people and the thought that someone has erotic feelings for a fictional creation with an extremely simplified depiction of a humanoid body might definitely be considered abnormal for people who see it as an alien concept.

And then there are people like Sinitron who generally prefer cartoons over anime and who would have to try to find their equivalent counterparts in the universe of American cartoon porn or other, in his case more vintage areas and I can understand why that experiment usually fails as the abstraction on this level is even bigger and makes the entire concept seem like a joke rather than anything else.

Anyway, I can understand why someone who generally dislikes anime would find the thought of masturbating to an anime-styled piece of art more than just weird, but I refuse to believe that even these people, provided that they regularly browse the internet, have never come across a single work as the one mentioned above that gave them at least some erotic thoughts or feelings...

whenever people  make fun of someone for something they enjoy, it always seems to stem back to some sort of insecurities they have as a person. ridicule is a weakness, and i feel sorry for those who feel the need to point out the flaws in everyone else as if they are some authority on what is acceptable and what isnt. there is nothing wrong with or nothing to be ashamed of enjoying what you do so long as it doesnt harm anyone else, and there's nothing more to it

that's why the reasoning doesn't make any sense - the popular belief that if i don't understand the way someone else thinks, it's wrong, weird or threatening to me in some way.

everyone has their own preferences for all kinds of things, including what turns them on, whether it be different fetishes or visual appetites. i dont understand people that have, for example, a foot fetish. but i'm not going to judge someone because they like something i dont. that's their thing and that's ok with me.

even further, something like furry porn grosses me out. but i'm not going to walk up to a furry artist and tell them that. what good is that going to do? they put their stuff out there and it's there for a certain audience. if you don't like it, don't look at it.
