so these forums were free? I'm looking to get a forum for my site, but want something secure and easy to customize. My cpanel only offers some outdated version of phpbb and some other crappy forum system.

yes, SMF is free and open source. phpbb, punbb and yabb are some other free forum software as well. but afaic, smf has the largest community and is the easiest to mod (mod installations are ridiculously easy).

And if you're not too comfortable with SMF, I've tried PunBB before and that one's pretty easy to use as well!

well..it was simple for me. you just upload it via ftp and punch in a few variables. where are you stuck?
