IGN referred to the controls as "clunky" and stiff, while GamesRadar claimed "the D-pad controls felt wrong for a 3D game." Basically, all my fears I have for this game's controls exist and then some.

My demo was admittedly very short so I didn't get much of a chance to savor the moments, but I will say that the game, while visually strong, has a very "clunky" feel to it that hasn't gone away since my last hands-on. The game's been designed around the Wii remote exclusively, and while it's great to get a Metroid game that harkens back to the old-school NES and Super NES days, it's hard to ignore a lot of the stiffness of the game's control. Wall jumping didn't feel as fluid and natural in this game, for example. And while I can appreciate the Wii pointer control for first-person mode, it feels awkward to jump in and jump out constantly – not to mention that you can't move around while you're looking through Samus' visor -- only rotate from the spot that you were standing in when you jumped into first-person mode.

Wall jumping isn't fluid? I didn't expect that. Admittedly, I read very little from the previews because I want this game to be as much of a surprise as possible. It's an absolute shame the game was designed with the Wiimote sideways because it makes no sense playing a 3D Metroid game with NES styled controls for most of the game. When this game was first announced, I was so excited but ever since the control scheme was announced, my excitement for this game pretty much went away. The only reason I'm getting it is because it's a Metroid game for the Wii and that's it. I'm not even looking forward to playing it. The people who decided to make the game not use the Nunchuck can go fuck themselves with a broken pipe for ruining what could have been an amazing game. If none of the other games I'm looking forward to this fall are releasing before October 24, 2010, I'll probably be stuck playing this piece of shit on my birthday. Fucking wonderful.  Fuck Team Ninja.

Probably very well. So while it plays much like the 2D Metroid games, that doesn't translate so flawlessly in a 3D adventure where gamers are used to precise analog controls that could have easily been implemented and made the game much easier to control. If they just gave me Nunchuck support, I would be excited as hell about this game. Instead, in typical Nintendo fashion, they're forcing their gimmicky control scheme down gamers throats instead of giving them more options.

I have all the right to be pessimistic. Because of the size of the d-pad, I hate playing the Wimote sideways even for 2D gaming. The idea of playing a 3D game on it just makes me want to rage. >_<
