dont just post albums that you like a lot because that would go in the "what are you listening to" thread

subtle - a new white
they might be giants - apollo 18
muse - absolution
queen - queen II
king crimson - in the court of the crimson king
alice in chains - dirt
buckethead - giant robot
the mars volta - de-loused in the comatorium
mr. bungle - mr. bungle

not all of those albums are my favorite albums or even made by my favorite artists, but they all changed my life somehow

lenko

mr bungle - california
nujabes - modal soul
daft punk - homework
beck - sea change
<emanhattan> i remember pingu ice cream

Here's a list of albums that had a huge impact on my musical tastes. It's organized by the time I became largely influenced by the sound of these bands. The Alan Parsons Project may be placed inaccurate though.

2006 - "Past, Present & Future" & "Year of the Cat" - Al Stewart (The album Year of the Cat got me into music and the album Past, Present & Future was the first album I possibly couldn't get enough of. Not only that, but PP&F was the first concept album to make me appreciate those type of albums in general.)
2006 - ___________ - Joe Walsh (Some mix CD my dad made with nothing but legally downloaded Joe Walsh songs was one of the first really rocky albums I liked. Too bad I didn't really try to get into his actual albums until early '09, but I didn't start pirating music until around a year ago so w/e.)
2006 - "Dark Side of the Moon" - Pink Floyd (I think DSotM was the first progressive rock album I really liked a lot. The song High Hopes from their last studio album might have been the first progressive rock song that I ever really enjoyed though.)
2007 - "Rubber Soul" - The Beatles (This album got me into the band and I ended up listening to almost nothing but the Beatles for over half a year. A lot of their albums had an influence on my musical tastes, but it was more individual songs than albums as a whole that had a huge impact for my taste in music.)
2007 - Tales of Mystery and Imagination - The Alan Parsons Project (This album was very unique and different from anything I have ever listened to before. It made me appreciate experimental music much more and caused me to want to take a closer look into progressive rock in general.)
2007 - "Homework" & "Discovery" - Daft Punk (Opened me up to electronica and made me realize good lyrics aren't always important. >_>)
2008 - Queen II - Queen (I think this was the first hard rock album I really liked a lot. It's pretty progressive for hard rock though.)
2008 - "Mr. Bungle," "Disco Volante," & "California" - Mr. Bungle (All three of their albums had a major impact on my musical tastes and made me much more open minded as a music listener.)
2008 - ___________ - Secret Chiefs 3 (I used to not care for aerobic influences in music until I got into this band. I left part of it blank because I'm not sure if it was Second Grand Constitution and Bylaws or Book M that got me to really like aerobic influences.)
2009 - "In the Court of the Crimson King" & "Red" - King Crimson (These two albums blew me away the first time I listened to them. If I were ever to create an album, their music would have quite an impact. If I were to ever take up drums, the songs In the Wake of Poseidon from their second album and Red from their seventh album would have a huge impact on my style. I didn't include their second album to the list because only one song from that album had a real impact on my tastes.)
2009 - ___________ - Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath is the first metal band I like and I really got into them recently. I don't think there's one specific album by them that got me into their music. Their music from their 2nd-6th albums just really grew on me overtime. Their first album is awesome too, but it didn't really have an impact for my musical tastes.)

oh also i guess saying how they changed your life makes it a better thread

uhh

subtle - a new white

rtil sent me this album, and i asked for it after hearing "she" in zekey's "MASS" cartoon. it opened my mind to music that wasn't rock music, and also started my taste for experimental stuff. after getting this album i went through a phase for about 2 years where i hated pop music and metal

they might be giants - apollo 18

though this isnt the FIRST album i ever got by they might be giants, it's the second. the first i got was the spine, and that wasn't really tHAT different from a pop rock band's album except that it was quirkier. apollo 18 introduced me to bands with songs that were under 10 seconds long and stuff like that. before i got into they might be giants my favorite bands were afi and simple plan and sum 41 and blink 182 and other gay punk shit bands like that

muse - absolution

this album brought me out of the phase where the only music i listened to was melt banana, subtle, they might be giants and select songs from guitar hero

queen - queen II

this album removed my negative bias on classic rock that i had for no reason (i know that the album isnt classic rock)

king crimson - in the court of the crimson king

this album made me further appreciate older music while also getting me into progressive rock simultaneously

alice in chains - dirt

this album solidified my decision to not do drugs and shit and also introduced me to grunge

buckethead - giant robot

this album made me appreciate metal and become interested in becoming a better guitarist

the mars volta - de-loused in the comatorium
mr. bungle - mr. bungle

its hard to say what the two last albums' effect on me was in words. it's like they gave me a whole new outlook on music and what can be classified as music i guess. it's not as gay as it sounds

lenko

fuck i may as well do the same

mr bungle - california
Just opened my eyes past what, back then, I considered the 'limits' of music or whatever. theres like a million genres covered on this album and it blew my mind when i first listened to it ages ago

nujabes - modal soul
got me into instrumental hip-hop and trip-hop which are now two of my fave genres

daft punk - homework
i used to detest dance/electronic music due to scooter and bonkers' prevalence in the UK as well as a horrific station called Galaxy that used to play really shitty dance music all the time and was the radio station of choice at my school. my friend lent me this and discovery and a few years later i'm now a massive dance/electronic buff

beck - sea change
made me not dismiss beck as an eclectic oh-so-quirky goofball and made me realise that not all acoustic albums are 'boring shit'
<emanhattan> i remember pingu ice cream
<emanhattan> it was a better time
<emanhattan> when the penguins were cold and delicious

Quote from: W.A.C.2008 - Queen II - Queen (I think this was the first hard rock album I really liked a lot. It's pretty progressive for hard rock though.)
Oh, wait. The first hard rock album I ever liked was the Best of Led Zeppelin Vol. 1 and 2. That was in December '06. Queen still had a major impact on my musical tastes though, especially that album.

Edit-

Although Led Zeppelin was the first hard rock band I ever liked, Queen II was the album to get me into the genre.

Edit-

It got me so into hard rock that I underrated a lot of their more mellow songs. <_<

look brosephs "changing your life" can be as simple as just have a slight effect on the way that you live

so if a certain band opens you up to a new type of music then they cahnged your life

therefore everyone here has an album that changed their life and those that deny it are afraid of sounding like those fags that say "music is my life and i can't live without it" etc whatever

in actuality just saying that albums changed your life doesnt make you a fag so dont worry about it hombres

Flash

all these albums changed the way I listen to music

King Crimson - everything, basically
everything about this band is innovative and lsitening to its albums really helped me develop a better focus on music
like, I pay more attention to details, I enjoy the slow build-ups more, it made my musical taste more eclectic

echolyn - Mei
a 49-minute song that doesn't get boring, doesn't repeat itself, and manages to not be pretentious. yeah, it's a one-track cd, and it's really good, got me into appreciating vocals more

Robert Fripp - Exposure
made me realize how important it is to listen to an album all the way through, and to value different "weird" vocals more, be more open-minded really

Dream Theater - Awake
I don't like it today as much as I did a few years ago but it got me into progressive rock and, ultimately, into all kinds of different music

Frank Zappa - We're Only In It For the Money
basically: I didn't know music could be this hilarious even after you listen to it a million times

^ lmfao yeah

RobHalford

Judas Priest - Painkiller
I didn't listen to much metal at the time. Most of the shit I listened to was scene garbage like Disturbed and Trivium. But then I heard the title track. And I knew what metal sounded like.

Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Yeah, I'd heard the Number of the Beast shit and liked it, so I made sure to listen to this album. Hoooooooooooooooooollllllllllly shit. There isn't one bad song.

Opeth - Blackwater Park
This is what got me into prog metal. It's just such a diverse and heavy album.

At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
This got me into melodeath. Blinded by Fear is only second to Painkiller in terms of my favorite songs ever.

Death - Symbolic
I've always hated straight death metal. The horrid vocals in the genre really ruin the great technical expertise of the musicianship. But this album is different. It has that heavy double bass, crushing riffs, and thick bass lines. But the vocals are inspired and thoughtful. You can actually make out what's being said. Why death metal didn't evolve moreso from this album instead of Leprosy is a mystery to me.

depeche mode - the singles 81-85 and rem - automatic for the people
pretty much got me into music. I saw them in borders when I was like 7 and convinced my parents to buy them because they looked nifty or something. before that I never really listened to music besides the kiddie shit that everyone was raised on. of course, then I got into shitty britpop shit like erasure

rammstein - sehnsucht
aaaaand then I got into metal and gave up on shitty britpop shit

oh yeah everyone in 8th grade thought I was a nazi because I listened to rammstein! and since then people have thought I'm a nazi even though I can't stand rammstein now

melt banana - cell-scape
then I got into weird experimental noise shit, which is where I am now

wreck of the hesperus - eulogy for the sewer dwellers
I also got into doom metal

the rolemodels - lets go die and session men of the apocalypse - session men of the apocalypse
some punk thing and a noise ska album that I got for $2. I started buying cheap CDs to find obscure awesome shit that I wouldn't find any other way.

saul williams - ________
I can't remember which album it was but that was when I stopped dismissing all rap as talentless shit

although most rap is still talentless shit

lmao I love how the bands here get more obscure as the list progresses!!

^ LOL

here is one

the music isn't the greatest shit ever. it's catchy but kind of slow. but it's really well put together considering the circumstances surrounding it's recording, and the lyrical content is disturbing to sarcastic to very self-indulgent. i have a lot of respect for the person who wrote it.
