Mememe is pretty damn amazing on more than one level. Beautifully animated, an interesting criticism about the anime industry and its fans and an amazing way of transforming something seemingly mundane a well executed story... I'm still not sure whether I have understood all aspects about the film since there is a lot to analyze, but I can definitely say that it gave me goosebumps the first time I watched it...
A must watch for every anime fan imo.

The sad thing, however, is that I haven't even seen or heard of any others yet...

The official website is lagging like hell recently... which might be a good sign as it shows that the project keeps attracting more and more attention, but the clips take ages to load. So far I haven't found any alternative source yet but if any of you guys know another way to watch or even download the films, be sure to let us know.

Hell I probably fall in with these casuals but I already cringe hearing the relatively nerdy dudes in class talking about how mememe was "lol XD SOOOO TRIPPY"
I do NOT want to deal with narutards and snk cosplayers talking about how it's their favorite animu and how they've totally read the mango

I do heavily enjoy mememe though and I've watched it about 30 times and I believe I'm starting to gain an understanding of it, perhaps soon enough I'll make a long post about it

ME!ME!ME! is what I love about the best of Japanese animation. Its dynamic. Its neither ambiguous nor heavy handed with its message. Its consistently engaging and it doesn't outstay its welcome. All kinds of wonderful.

i wish i could find the interview i read from some of the creators behind it, they were talking about some hilarious things like the history of boob bounce animation in japan and its origins from early gainax people.. they take their craft very seriously

That sounds like a good read, I hope one day someone stumbles on it again and posts it here.

i think some people are overanalyzing it but it's definitely more than just fanservice, there's clearly a story behind the girl and the guy. also the lyrics are important, translated they come out like this:

Quoteいつだって いつだって 君と二人でいたよね いつだって いつだって 君の事考えていたんだ 君のそば
この先も この先も ????? ????いたんだよ
We were together all the time
I was always thinking about you
Like your...
(can't hear the lyrics clearly)
———
2:47 - 3:18
You told me
I am the sorrow and hatred within you
What you made up was a lie?
Are you sure you didn't make an idol out of me?
Your narrow mind and false memories
will change
———
3:57 - 4:29
Slowly tell me a life lesson from the fruit of your indecisive mind
Extreme unsatisfaction, many realities covered with a wafer
Direct blasting, cut in two, days that were cut into two
Love me, give me back
What I have given to you until now
If only I can erase them,
I will fall into the deepest depths, falling into the unconscious,
I kept telling myself, a diversion
I will sing, sing for you, you are unbearable,
You are not here, fading out with sparkles
———
4:30 - 5:10
I remember your scent
I am miles away, you are only thing I have on my mind.
I was dreaming the same dream, in that moment, so...
I am thinking about you like that time
I am a cry baby, more than you can imagine
I will be waiting for you
———
[Shuu screams and morphs]
———
5:32-6:26
(repeating some words from next song.)
———
6:40 - 7:49
hey hello hey (????)
hey hello
hey hello look at sky
What are you doing now?
How are you going to live?
No matter how long you live, you are a loser
Even though you are smiling
(something) almost frightening
It built up and up, about to overflow
The figure, those memories
Over-glorified, one after another
Envy Envy, that side looks fun
Envy Envy, that girl
I have tried my best
What have you "tried" as you?
When you finally realised, it is a shattered mirror
I wish you would notice
From your side, from your side
I was waiting for you, I loved you
hey hello hey (something)
hey hello
hey hello, look at sky
I won't be anywhere, anymore
Goodbye.

i get where you're coming from but when something's that gratuitously sexualised i find it hard to stomach let alone analyse for deeper meaning

crackers

would I show it to my mum ----> no

could i ever explain to my mum ----> no

therefore - it's not art

Gilthwixt

I wasn't aware your mum was the expert authority on all things art :^)

crackers

i wasn't aware you were trying to get smart with me you anime loving pedophile :^)

when you think of hiroshima do you close your eyes and weep irradiated tears? real irradiated tears?

soup

"He was shown the smallness and tinsel emptiness of the little Earth gods, with their petty, human interests and connections - their hatreds, rages, loves and vanities; their craving for praise and sacrifice and their demands for faiths contrary to reason and nature."

"...it stimulates the part of the brain called "shatners-bassoon", and that's the bit of the brain that deals with...time perception..."

Gilthwixt

I'm just saying, there's probably a fuck ton of art out there that you wouldn't show or be able to explain to your mom. So what? That doesn't mean it has no artistic value. I totally understand how you feel about Me!Me!Me!, it's not something I would show a casual acquaintance or anyone I know that wouldn't feel comfortable watching it, let alone appreciate it. But that's fine, because if every work of art ever made was inoffensive and familiar enough for everyone in the world to appreciate, what would the point of making art be? Shit would be boring.

Or would you rather all art just be giant balloon dog sculptures?

crackers

stop being so understanding and call me a cunt or something

long quote with the lyrics

Wow, this only further reinforces my ideas about it. Not being able to speak japanese, I kept forgetting that the lyrics weren't flavor words

fair enough, it's not for everyone. i do think some parts of it were gross, but i believe it was intentional
