Welcome to DayZ (A trailer for DayZ)
The popular survival mod that increased the base game's sales tenfold; DayZ, a zombie shooter that requires ARMA II: Combined Operations to play.

you start washed up on the beaches of "chernarus", 225km^2 of russian roadside, urban, suburban, and rural territories. You have little to aid you, a soda, can of food, and a bandage is about all you get. you'll start walking around and find a city or a town or whatever. then you'll find 6 zombies or so walking about it. doesn't really sound like much of a challenge, but these zombies are less of the zombies that stumble slowly when they need a healthy dosage of brain like day of the dead. they're more like the freakish infected from 28 days later who engage in a full sprint the second they smell life.

it's up to you to find the gear to prolong your lifespan. a vast array of weapons to be discovered, as well as food products, medical supplies, survival equipment, and most dangerous of all- other players. you and up to 49 other blokes run around in chernarus, and whenever you meet someone else, you typically have the option of either keeping that person as a friend and travelling with him, waving hi to him and continuing your lonely crusade, or gunning him down horribly for the 2 cans of soup and the nice and shiny revolver he has. (it is advised that while going the peaceful route, you make sure to blurt out "FRIENDLY" to him so he doesn't get the wrong idea. he'll probably salute you and keep slinking about, or perhaps just gank you with his winchester from 40m across the street because maybe he's just the fucking prick you could've been to him. (the latter is uncommon, however.))

the harsher experiences can be alleviated when you have a friend (or the plural form) to run around with and make sure that you have a greater chance to kill whatever's standing in your way. or maybe because you like fun. one thing to note, just like in the trailer above, when you die, YOU START FROM SCRATCH. the idea of dying, basically giving up everything you worked hours for gone in an instant gives the game an unfaltering sense of urgency and paranoia. and you will enjoy every moment of it. if you exit a server (legitimately, this means NOT alt+f4ing out of combat) your location and current gear are saved to the server (remember to favorite it so you remember where to look if you wanna continue that game at some point.)

there is only one objective- to survive. dayz is more of an experience than a game, to say the least. creator and bohemia interactive employee dean "rocket" hall made it as a sort of social experiment originally, to see how people would react to such a situation the mod sticks you in (player vs. zombie vs. player). he however, did not foresee its booming success, and now over a million people are playing dayz, so bohemia decided to take the mod and make it into an official product. hall has stated that the official product has slated to be released somewhere at the arse end of 2012 which could mean "any day" at this point. i predict a holiday release.

now that i've provided a crash course, i'll ask some questions! do you play dayz? do you want to play dayz? are you more interested in the standalone release than the mod? if you do play, do you have any memorable experiences to share?

watching someone play this game looked like a nightmare. the amount of bugs they encountered was worse than a pre-alpha release of a fan mod

I've always thought it looked cool, but I'm going to wait until the bugs are mostly ironed out / the standalone release to give it a go.

I also don't have arma II (or any arma game for that matter)

rtil

i think most people that bought arma 2 bought it just to play dayz

Most of the bugs won't be fixable for the mod, it's limiting them a lot. That's why they're making the stand-alone as far as I know. Well, and to make money.

wasn't it supposed to come bundled with arma 3 whenever it is completed

i have arma but i'm not very interested in another zombie game

if you mean the stand alone; never heard of it being released with ArmA 3, but I never looked much into that all. What I do know is that the guy who made the DayZ mod is working on ArmA 3.

DAYZ GROUP LOG DAY 1- "THE GHEI TEAM"

players involved: Blu, Lion, Gladius, Meeko

Attempted to find each other- efforts futile. Meeko dies 8 times to zombie attacks, Lion is killed twice by zombie attacks- Lion and Meeko are able to meet up, only to succumb to another attack. Gladius is nowhere to be found, He is killed once.
Respawning from the town of Drozhino, I run across the rolling grassy hills. Traversed windy mountain and rediscovered Bor. Found a player trapped inside a house named "Jon", attempting to fend off a grouping of zombies, he fired at me once and i told him that I was friendly. I assisted him in his work, cleaning out the house- however, I kept my eye closely towards him, he held an M1014 shotgun, very unique weapon to discover in Chernarus. A zombie entered the house- Jon and I jumped. He spun around to give justice with his weapon, and we hear- "Click!" Jon had run out of ammunition. With my Winchester, I make short work of the undead being. Jon freezes his back to me, and that is when I realize that I have a chance to take advantage of the situation. I put a shell in his skull. Unconscious and bleeding profusely, his weaponry and gear serve him little good now. I take what is required on my journey as I dart out of the building, I inform the others about my position in the hopes of us being connected shortly. I run down the dirt road and back into the grassy forests going southeast of Bor. Meeko tells me that he is camped out at the military airfield near Balota, I'm making it closer and closer, and I'm beginning to get excited. After searching a low-yield building on the outskirts of Bor, I run into a group of survivors that are running from a single zombie. Curious... the survivors seem well-off, one of them even dons a ghillie suit, wonder why they're going in such a desolate direction as well. I proceed on in the direction of the airfield, when I am notified that Meeko has died once again. Frustrated, I continue to the airfield anyways, and then I began to hear gunfire. It was coming from behind me, and I saw 3 bullets whiz from behind my current position. I spin around, desperately trying to switch to my sidearm; finally equipping my handgun, My bleeding erupts, it's clear to see that I have been shot. I feel the bullet splinter through my body as it fractures my leg- overwrought with pain, I stumble onto the ground. Fighting for whats left of me, I can see one of the people that were firing at me. It was the man in the ghillie suit! He was armed to the teeth, brandishing an M249 LMG. As he taps the last piece of lead needed into my body, I can't help but think that this was karma. I made a selfish decision, to take that man's equipment, and now I'm paying the price.

Sorry, Jon.

I have died.

After a few more attempts to connect with the others, we all decided to join a different server, I had much less neat stuff on this one, though. After attempting to join up with Lion on our new adventure, Meeko takes a jog across the railroad tracks. After waiting for Lion in a barn, I decide that he is taking too long. I step outside, and there are a bunch of larger buildings to explore. Gathering new gear, and slipping through the zombies, I'm forced to fight back against another one. Unfortunately, I had forgotten how much bloody sound a double-barrel makes. I spend about 4 minutes after the incident running in circles through and around the barn and it's surrounding buildings. Lion's taking too damned long. I run and somehow wind atop a large bale of hay. A crowd of zombies hover around one side of it, looking at me, and awaiting my descent. Lion's still nowhere to be found, so I take this chance to see what my options are, analyzing my weapons. I then thrust my arm violently, chucking pineapple at the dead. I quickly fall behind the bale of hay, my ears promptly covered. After a sudden shake of the ground, I peek around the hay to survey the damage. Every undead soul had perished, 11 down to one grenade. I wish Lion were around for that.

LATER

The time is 8:15 at night, and the moon is looking particularly full for the town of chernogorsk. If you've ever been to cherno at night, you wouldn't need me to tell you that the inhabitants that are NOT infected can be a much greater threat than the zombies can. After browsing a dilapidated supermarket, I sneak through the quiet city streets. I walk with a crouch on the sidewalk, peering at a pub ahead of me, and a large hospital a bit further down the way. I hear a loud crack, and my vision grows grey. I've been shot in the torso! I dart to the left at the intersection across from the pub, bleeding out speedily. I patch myself up quickly, calm my nerves down, and attempt to communicate with whoever saw me as an enemy. No response. I take an alternate path around the pub and buildings, and suddenly, everything is a high-pitched squeal. My vision shakes and flashes white for a moment, what in the hell could that have been? I make my way into a nearby building as a repeat of what had just happened occurs a few seconds later. I can see now that there have been 2 satchel charge detonations that were awfully close to my position. I hide in the building for a moment, regaining my hearing, and picking up additional supplies that i'll need to get out of this one alive. Then I caught a glimpse outside the window. A man in a ghillie suit, armed with what looked like a very powerful, modern sniper rifle in his hands, on the second story of the hospital, firing at people down the lane, unaware of the survivor hanging out in the building adjacent. He lays on the punishment to those who have remained ambiguous in their role as a hero or bandit, I draw my enfield and zoom in on him- peering from the clear glass window in the neighboring complex. A headshot delivered, instant kill. I dart across the street to seize my newfound wealth from my opponent, aside from the weapon, I also carry something else now. I climbed the ladder to get to the top, after reaching my foe's corpse, and discovered something interesting. 4 deceased bodies on the rooftop! I began to wonder if the one who was sniping was just one who sought revenge on those who were responsible, or that he himself was responsible, and locked his skeletons up in the rafters of his fortress of solitude. Its not my story to tell, though. Only one I had ended. I gazed across the night sky, in eager anticipation of what may come in the future, and excited about the tools found that I could share with the others.

i think the stand-alone was delayed

if they could make the leap from mediocre/crappy mod to funny stand-alone like killing floor did it might be worth checking out
