General / favorite Miyazaki films
July 14, 2009 02:09 PM
Kiki was the first one I ever saw so it's still one of my favs, Porco Rosso as well, which I didn't expect to enjoy at all. I like Spirited Away, mainly because it's gorgeous, but I'm not in love with it like a lot of Miyazaki fans. Same goes for Totoro, but Totoro also felt like a very..."what was the point of that" type of thing. STILL haven't seen Mononoke or Howl, I keep fuckin' forgetting to rent 'em. I need to make sure I see them both when I get back to school. Ponyo I'm lookin' forward to.

Quote from: rtiland i'm excited for this year although it's going to be even more crowded than last year which i have trouble imagining.

Apparantly last year was so crowded that it was a Fire Hazard. Sounds like this year, if you don't get there early enough, once they cap a certain amount of people that go into the building, regardless of if you have a badge or not, they won't even let you in.

Nope, Red gets Bulbasaur and Blue/Green gets Charmander, they're the only ones that have their corresponding colored Pokemon switched. Still makes sense though, since your rival always picks the one strongest against yours.

Ying: I've been doing more cel-shading lately, mainly because my soft-shading's not the greatest. I'd like to get better at both, though, but I agree that the earlier the stage of my work the better it looks. Ah well.

tmk: I have an idea to remind me of light source next time I do something like this, I can't keep forgetting or nothing'll progress. Thanks though.

Buck: When HG/SS comes out I probably will, knowing me.

Blordow: I gave him the little spike on his back like he has in the earlier art, but it does make him look kinda awkward.

squfar: Nope, I did.

lenko: Seriously, it's amazing.

What about something like this? I used to see more comics put together like this on a few different sites back in the day, not so much anymore. It kinda works.

Opted out of re-doing the bottom in sketch form so I removed it alltogether. I got too focused on this piece, which I considered putting at the bottom but it's probably better off being a standalone piece.

Dunno if you guys've seen this series before, but some of you might really appreciate it.

BloodyCheery: Gengar's the favorite of so many people I know (my DAD even) so I took extra care to make him creepy :]

lasse: Check the description for a link to a picture of Mewtwo I did a while back. Missingno's there YOU JUST CAN'T SEE HIM.

Zekey: Tangela's my favorite Grass type.

lenka: Gyarados I thought I screwed up so bad, thanks! Really, Cloyster? He's neat, never see much love for him.

Sash: Thanks!

psi: I always forget they get different names in the international versions, any interesting ones?

Jehosapha: The bottom'll be fixed soon.

I actually did sketch it out beforehand, but I thought that if the entire thing was nothing but sketch then it would look odd in my normal gallery and would eventually be scrapped, so I added something more colorful to the top and bottom. I'll do some experimenting with the .psd I'm sure I can do something better with it.

I think it's mainly the Pokemon Trainer that looks like utter crap, I wasn't happy with it either. I'll probably remove him, but I thought the BG was half-decent, for my ability anyway, so maybe I'll leave that part there. Ah well.

Something else interesting to note is some of their weird poses. A lot of them were drawn in odd shapes because I wanted to see how many I could fit into a single page (usually ranged from anywhere from 7-10). While in some respects it was "restricting" the cool part was that a lot of the pages ended up looking like little puzzles made up of Pokemon pieces. The only one that didn't turn out that way was the final page, which I saved for Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise and Pikachu, (may color that one seperately).

Thanks for the feedback thus far, anyone got any favorites among them?

Sketched out all 150 of the Red/Blue/Green/Yellow Version Pokemon over the course of five days in random order on 20 and 1/2 sketchbook pages. Photoshopped every single one of them together in ID order and made this collage. I've seen a few other pieces where people have tried their hand at doing EVERY single Pokemon ever designed, figured I'd take a jab at the first generation.

Totally worth it. Never saw the trailer for it so I went into it blind last night with a bunch of people, it was fuckin' hilarious.

Not as excited for this one as I am with the GS remakes, but looks kinda cute nonetheless.

To me it was about two bitter and obsessed old men chasing after different dreams and doing anything to make sure they came true, even if it killed them or killed other people in the process. Also yeah the first 10 minutes or so were incredibly well done, almost like it was its own seperate movie and reminded me of what I liked about Wall-E. The short at the beginning was also probably my favorite of all the opening shorts.

I love the beefy shark guy up at the top of the page. Also you should try to revive your "older" style and keep it under your belt overall, it shows great range since I think it stands on its own, regardless of it being "outdated" to your current ability.

Yeah, better than the MGS collab. Nalem's part is my fav, also the menu and overall collection aspect of it is very nice.

PROBABLY SOME DOUCHE.

Unknown and Zeurel's stuff are both fucking amazing. Basically they do these movies for "tournaments" on DA, where it tests their ability to storytell and make use of a set universe and characters. Most of the entrants do comics but these two specifically do animation. The scary part is that they do them INCREDIBLY fast and for the most part they're all of incredibly high quality.

EDIT: Also that's mainly why it's so hard to determine what's happening. Unless you're completely invested in the tournaments they do these for and you read every winning entry to completely keep up with the story, it's pretty difficult to tell what's going on. That's why I typically just see these when they're finished and enjoy them for what they are.
