What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

Yes and no... everything is inspired but if not totally ripped off it has its original value and there will always be things that haven't been done yet.
The above sight partly is true but viewing it in a fatalistic and absolute way would make life seem dull, empty and completely senseless.

true

but you have to distinguish between too much influence from one thing and taking influence from a lot of small things

the second one obviously being the better way 2go

kinda like mixing paints to get the color you want. like taking a bunch of ideas from somewhere else to make into something 'yours'

Not only has it been done and said over trillions of times but I also don't believe in and hate the idea of it.
"whatever it is, it's been done before. simpsons did it."
"You have a character with red hair that's a goofball? way to copy from j.k. rowling, dick"
"I'm going to use the concept of war being bad behind my painting. It's okay that it's been done, because nothing else would be original. all is hopeless"

I hate discussions like this whenever people around me are trying to write or brainstorm. It's like a way to make yourself feel better for having shitty hackneyed ideas.

This is just abandoment of creating new ideas; there are still frontiers just all the good ones are taken.

I agree with him though.

its not like individuals from the middle ages could come up with the idea of virtual computerized worlds that blah blah blah to human society. I mean on a VERY fundamental level, everything or most of everything has been done, but above that we haven't come across every idea possible and we never will.

I mean how the hell can we know everything's been done? We dont know the things that haven't

i think a better metaphor is that everything comes from something and nothing is entirely new

That is correct but their are certainly entertaining enough ideas out there to be considered original, one can spectate nothing is original because they never actually discovered or created anything that wasn't influenced by stories, poems, etc themselves.

meaning that new ideas exist but its not like they didn't come at least partially from older ideas

not everything has been done but whats being done is influenced by what has been

Unless if you were never subjected to old ideas but still came up with new ones.

the fact that the founder has found a new idea with the material of old ideas doesnt make the new idea any less new or whatever.

I don't think it doesnt mean:

maybe im missing somehting

i think you are reading a bit too deeply into it

its really more about taking in the old and making new and not worrying so much about being original because if you're really good at what you do it will come naturally
