Depite this topic is quite entertaining I am quite shocked about how many people here that I really respect have actually stolen. I have never actively shoplifted in my entire life... there was this one time I was in a hardware store with my mother and my grandmother when I was still a toddler... My grandmother put some really cheap shit in my hood and my mother didn't say anything about it. Of course 'we' got caught and we all ended up getting a lifelong house ban from that store. I was about 2 or 3 years old and I couldn't even talk back then, being abused as a tool for shoplifting... it was a fucking insolence since it wasn't even like they couldn't affort the shit they were trying to steal, my grandmother is a pretty rich bitch and I have no idea why she has done that...
And this is one of the reasons why I despise any kind of shoplifting. Some people steal things though they actually would have enough money to buy it but are either just too greedy to spend the money on it or they just can't get enough, trying to actually make profit of a crime. For selling shit they don't own. For earning or saving money due to the loss of others' goods. Normal people have to work hard for this shit and others just take it, getting away with it...
Or to express it in other words: I was hoping the first lines of that chatlog were nothing but a dumb joke... It wasn't even a necessary part for the story whose absence would have made it incomplete, the only thing that it did was preventing me from pitying your for this little misadventure. Well Kott, I think the point that many people here are missing is the fact that I did not intend to steal anything. I stopped shoplifting back in march for good. I was raised in a house where stealing from large corporations and big chains was normal. My friends do it. My family did it. Thus is, or rather was, the way of life for me. I learned so many tricks from my stepfather when I was growing up... how to distract the LP if they were watching you, using crying children as a distraction, how to remove security tags and when to identify them as dummy tags (you know those ink tags on clothes? Pointless to take them off before you steal clothes. Theres no security measure in them. Once you get the clothes home, stick em in the freezer. The ink will freeze and you can cut off the tag.) etc.
But on this particular day, I couldnt carry everything I had and slipped a pack of gum in my pocket and highlighters in the other WITH FULL INTENTION of paying for them. I remembered to pull the gum out. The highlighters, however, I did not remember to take out, because they were in a pocket where I also had my nintendo ds, and the pack happened to be the same size as my ds and I just didnt realize I had anything in there by the time I got up to the counter. I paid for everything else.
Stealing is wrong no matter what you do, but the point of this story was that despite the fact I had given up on shoplifting, I was still sent to jail for a crime I didn't even intend to commit.

I have mentioned that I find it very ironic. Of course what happened to you is a ridiculous insolence in this particular case. In your case it was nothing but bad luck... in other cases it is a crime and should be treated as one. -For instance: That woman who tried to steal closes for her baby. She said she didn't have the money to buy these clothes which seems more or less like a good excuse. On the other hand, looking at the reasons why this lack of money exists often uncovers that it doesn't justify the act at all. Day by day I see unemployed people being interviewed on tv, financed by the state (living off my parents' taxes) who nag about not having enough money to live a decent life while they are smoking one fucking cigarette after the other.
We all spend money on bullshit, I'm sure everyone buys some really redundant things regularly but people must focus on the important things first.
No one is so poor that he can't affort baby clothes, worth 23$ and if I don't have any money for these things left, the rugrat's gotta wear the old rags for the rest of the month or I gotta smoke one or two boxes of cigs less than I usually do. But if I think that neither of these options would satisfy me and think that the only way to solve my problem is to steal what I can't seem to affort, I knowingly commit a crime and accept the risk of being caught and the possible consequences.
Of course I share your opinion that her punishment was even more stupid and even more ridiculous as yours but she should have been aware of the injustices and the inappropriateness happening behind the mask of the oh-so-wonderful system. Noone who has a common sense would deny to admit that stealing small things from a gigant company isn't much of a crime compared to pickpocketing the wallet of single persons who proably have the same of even a worse standart of life than you do but unfortunately our legal punishment system isn't based on common sense so think twice before accepting any risk of violating the law for it almost never is worth it.
