coming from a nearly all black school in texas, i definitely see where he is coming from. going to one of those (and teaching there too) is almost enough to turn anyone into a full-fledged racist

the difference is this: i have taught myself that this overwhelming stupidity is not the black's fault. i know TONS of white people who act the exact same way, and even, to a lesser degree, some white kids who act that way HERE IN PENNSYLVANIA (my school is almost entirely white). the point is that stupidity is not limited to race, and it must be social/cultural conditioning that is leading these kids to act this way

it's no secret that almost no kids give a shit about education, and this is true with every race. the general ideals that kids share are "school sucks, fuck school, we shouldnt have to go to school". it really is ridiculous that they can't see through the fact that school is a slight inconvenience to them, EVEN THOUGH most of their friends are met at school, and almost all of their skills are derived from school (including the ability to learn well).

to go along with this, tons of kids who are poorer come from families with a history of robbery and violence etc, and are thusly conditioned to have the same sort of tendencies as their relatives. i dont believe it to be genetic by any means. when someone needs to eat they learn to steal, then that trait carries on to get all of the luxuries in life, until they're dependent upon money. at that point they're completely reduced humans who value money and sex. drugs can get you both money and sex, so then that becomes a high value. these values are the ones that are instilled upon poor youth and it's why they are so angry at authority: authority claims that all of their values are wrong.

martin luther king was onto something when he said that poverty causes almost all of our social problems. personally, i think this entire fucking society values money way too much.

just finished reading it - i think the most important line in the whole essay was "no society takes on the characteristics
of its exceptions." i do think there are differences between races, mostly stemming from cultural traditions - and it is clearly prevalent in and outside of school.

i don't have any better answers than this teacher has, but the government handouts are prolonging and weakening the african american community, and until they stop they'll keep taking the cheese with arms wide open.

i dont think a lot of these black kids in the projects have good role models to look up to. their parents are probably totally fucked up, so they instead strive to be like rappers who have lots of money and women and who they can relate to because they came from the same kinds of broken homes in the projects that they did.

also lmao at the part about the mexicans

there should be a test that everyone has to pass to keep their newborn baby, and if they fail, a successful person will be forced to adopt the baby

For a year, I went to a predominantly black high school and it was reminding me of everything that happened. I guess it wasn't just my school. Its really sad that this happens and the solution seems out of grasp. But the liberal method is obviously not working.

Of course there were a couple of acceptions. One was a good friend of mine named Casey. Got accepted into an art college and worked his ass off with every other hooligan around him temptin him with shit. Dont know how he did it.

the problem has nothing to do with race or education, it's that kids are being raised to fail by their parents

it\\\'s because they\\\'re told that other people are to blame for their problems, there\\\'s nothing they can do to escape from their fate, and intelligence = whiteness

any intelligence is struck down like it\\\'s betraying their race. WTF!!!

my dad used to teach in an inner city school until he chose to pursue a less depressing career.

i was not born at the time.

yeah and the problem with it is that it's a cycle. parents teach their kids the wrong ideas on how to live a good life and then those kids teach it to their kids. the entire way that their mindset works makes it so that all material presented by white people/authorities is rejected and all information from black people is accepted, unless it conflicts with traditional black views. this gets confusing because it is unclear when this bias against white people is actually established, and i would venture to guess that it's probably in elementary school.

i just read it entirely and I found it really depressing BUT also very entertaining and hilarious in a bitter way.

I rarely ever get to be in touch with african american students but there are quite a few of them at my uni and most of them are ok dudes who most of the time mix in with the rest of the people very well.

Still I imagine public schools in u.s.a must be very different, specially a predominantly black school. I would probably try to get out of the place right away if it is as that teacher describes.

Aidionally, I can imagine it must be pretty spirit-shattering and frustrating to be a teacher and not feel like you are making any difference  in your students and they are not listening to you.

also lmfao at the part about the mexicans

i agree as well, but how many successfull people do you think there are who are willing to take care of all these children? who says that this new system will prevent bad parents from having kids until they learn how to be good parents themselves? and who do they look up to, im sure theyre bad parents because THEIR parents were bad too.
not to mention that all these bad parents will probably strike and cause a lot of shit because 'all da white people'd taken our kidz'

I'm still reading the article, but what you described sounds a lot like "acting white (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acting_white)".
