The reason they're putting Sonic in a car is because they know it would be unfair to have Sonic race against a bunch of karts without a kart of his own, seeing how he is probably faster on foot than any of the vehicles in the game.
At least, that was the reason I was given.

I liked sonic adventure 2 for the gamecube
sonic shuffle was a terrible game UNLESS you were playing with all humans and no computers. the computers were impossible to beat and made the experience mind-numbingly frustrating. 4 player human games were actually very fun. but how often do you get 4 people playing a dreamcast at the same time. yeah
and even if you got 4 people round a dreamcast there is a much better game to play anyways

I would definitely prefer arcade version as opposed to ps2 version, though
oh yeah, and there are still a couple of games that are still online and you cant get them working unless you have the broadband adapter for the dreamcast
