despite avatar being nominated for a disgusting amount of awards, there were a few things that were really nice to see, like up in the best picture category.

I dont know why but as much of a fan as I am of pixar and "up". Fantastic mr fox was my favorite animated feat of last year and I hope people apreciate it/does well. I like that chaotic sense of storytelling, and I had never seen a wes anderson movie before.

Also that nazi from inglorious bastards christoph waltz was fuckin great.
It really pisses me off how dumb critics criticised that movie for using different languages, while as tarantino himself said "that is the future of cinema".WAY better than hiring americans to speak english and pretend they are germans like in valkyrie

hope dr. parnassus gets something, that movie was phenomenal

of all the nominees ive only seen fantastic mr fox coraline and inglourious basterds

and all of them deserve something

My fav pick would be Coraline because of the HUGE amount of production work a stop-motion has even had in its category and the story was great and bizarre. But 2nd was Mr. Fox for doing something different not aimed at kids and using animation to its advantage to accent its narrative.

Also WOW, Up made it to Best Picture?! This hasn't happened since Beauty and the Beast in 1991. Although I don't think it will win, I'm still so happy to see that MAYBE Hollywood is starting to take some notice of animation (shame that is still had to be technically a "kids" film but I'm not criticizing).

lol jk ;b I could see people not liking it because it's a goofy story (if that's what you meant by bad movie). But just the cartoony-ness and humor were my tastes hands down. Like character animation was really really good in this film (mostly on Flint) because they used so much exaggeration (movement, faces, poses) to do things.

But yeah, I'm sad to see it not nominated :[ but the competition was tough this year and Kells getting a nom was a pleasant surprise! I bet they were so happy

yeah this forum colored my judgment of it a lot already.
I should download it but I was told that if I see it it should be in 3-d, because the only good part about it are the visuals, and 3-d makes it even better.

io would do that but i dont have any money and if i did i wouldnt waste it on a shitty film

the 3d glasses make it look darker and more dull
and the 3d itself isnt even remotely interesting it doesnt add to the movie at all

I went to see Up in 3d and holy shit it actually looked fantastic and cool you could see the house floating around the place. The thing with avatar in 3d, well it simply wasnt meant to be seen in 3d I guess its an "animated movie" thing.

Just watched all the shorts. I liked them all except for Logorama. I hope "la dama y el muerte"-(The Lady and Death), wins the Oscar because it's a great short with comedy and style and tells the whole story without words so the animation has to work harder to convince and it still made me laugh.

But if I predict it correctly, the Wallace and Gromit short will probably win since it was really well done too and more people are fans of them so they have that popular clout that will win them more votes just because of that.

And I agree Coraline was the first movie that made 3D worth watching. It allowed me to see the puppets and sets with depth and form the way the actual animator would have seen as he's creating the scene. Little details you would have ignored in the plain film are noticed in 3d like the frays in the doll and hair too.

Holy shit the lady and the reaper short was GREAT

Pretty fucking great. of all the ones there I think it deserves it the most.

Today I went to see the shorts that were nominated and all of them were great. Of the animated ones, French Roast was probably the weakest but it was still original and I liked it. Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty was hilarious. The Lady and the Reaper was incredible. A Matter of Loaf and Death was great. Logorama was fantastic. I got to see a few that weren't even nominated like the Pixar one that played before Up, which was okay. My favorite of all of them was called Runaway by Canadian director Cordell Barker who also made The Cat Comes Back and Strange Invaders. I was sad that Alma didn't get at least an honorable mention. The last one was called The Kinematograph and it was kind of pretentious but still worth a watch.

The live action ones were great as well. I especially likes The New Tenants, Miracle Fish and Instead of Abracadabra.

logorama was shit
it was just one big logo pun parade(barely even) , and at the end there is a halfassed attempt at a 'message'  when all of logorama is flooded by oil

I liked it.

OK I've almost watched all the films nominated for best picture with the exception of the blind side and avatar. Here are my opinions on them:

District 9 - i watched this a while back, but from what i remember i recall being impressed at how the movie switched from documentary-style to movie-style pretty seamlessly. that's all i remember um

An Education - loved this film, very strong character hitting some confusing and conflicting choices in her life. it was easy to sympathize with her, i think a lot of people could relate to this

The Hurt Locker - characters were interesting but the plot wasn't memorable. the way it was shot was fantastic however, and i'm glad to see kathryn bigelow get a lot of attention for this. most memorable shot for me was near the end, when he's picking out cereal in a huge aisle.

Inglourious Basterds - really fascinating antagonist, Landa, most memorable character of them all. however, most of the other characters were one-dimensional. had some great shots and great action, and i was impressed that it used little to no CG !! (or so i heard anyway)

A Serious Man - not as great as the Coens' previous films, but still pretty great. It had me curious and saddened at how a life can unravel so quickly. some of the side characters felt sort of muted (perhaps due to atmosphere or setting).

Precious - i feel this is the strongest movie of the bunch: it's startling, horrific, and no character is one-dimensional or flat, even Precious's detestable mother is given a chance to show her side of the story. It breaks the mold in that these are not the typical charming characters in films, these are real people that might live next door to you or go to school with you. their not amiable, suave, or even awkwardly likable at first glance. stunning performances from Sidibe and Mo'nique.

Up - fantastic animation. my favorite thing about pixar films is they never sacrifice a part of the story. it's moving within the first five minutes of the film, and keeps the momentum. even small, few-second shots are carefully thought out (my favorite example, when Karl dumps all the furniture/life treasures out of his house to get it floating again, all this junk is piled up and scattered everywhere except for his and his wife's armchairs, which are placed carefully side by side). i love the attention to detail this film has. however, i think the one weakness that pixar (and disney) films tend to have is to leave out mother characters (making them dead or just absent) and focus on these sort of male bonds. but i have heard that the next film (the bear and the bow) will focus more on a mother to daughter bond, so i'm looking forward to see how that balances out.

Up in the Air - i thought it was pretty overrated (and also somewhat uncomfortable to watch when i found out the people that got fired in the movie weren't actors, but real people that got laid off), didn't really have any strong characters, esp. the females. to me, this film just didn't use clooney to his full potential, and i just don't feel that this was cast well. The plot and situations also felt somewhat contrived.



to put it short - i think Precious should win.

I went to see them again today and the only ones that really held up were The Lady and the Reaper, Runaway and Logorama. I would say the Wallace and Gromit one but I'm not a big fan of Nick Park. I hope Runaway is online soon.

It was nice to see Jeff Bridges win something he's a great actor, along with Christoph Waltz. When The Hurt Locker beat out Avatar for almost every award at the BAFTA's i was pretty confident the same was going to happen at the AA's and im glad it did.
