i realized the only skills i have are several years of flash and other computer animation/drawing software also music and html shit
the problem is that i don't know where or how to market myself
can anybody give me any suggestions??????
You can't make a career or even a part time living off of it. I max out at about 100 bucks a month with client stuff.
the solution is to go to college taylor b

Technical colleges have really good hands on stuff and they can get you into the industry.

I built up contacts over about a year or so.
Find something that a lot of people aren't good at. Artists are dime a dozen. So I decided to start coding, and a lot more jobs opened up.
I always knew you as a music guy so I figured you'd be playing at a few gigs

craigslist
well after i made a demo reel i had a handful of people contact me about work
i might have just been lucky but my advice is to create a showcase of work, start building on a contacts list, make yourself available/approachable
and wait
that method has brought me some extra money over the months

I used to make almost $800 a week making banner ads, it was pretty good, allot of ad agencies look for people who can put things together for a deadline, obviously if they're look for people to design the ads someone with your experience wont cut it, but if they are looking just for someone to put the ads together there should be no reason you couldn't get the job.
if you want to make money off flash, do contract work. making a lot of money from stuff you do for free just based on ad revenue basically does not happen unless you're hugely popular

it just doesn't seem feasible. do as you like who am i to judge.
no yeah squeef you arent the first one to doubt our ambitions but honestly its not that difficult of a profession. all it involves is exactly what you would expect to require in any other job: a relatively small bit of luck, a knowledge of the skill required to complete the job required, and ambition.
ive seen dumb kids get pretty far in the business only to falter because well, they were dumb kids. the difference between me and taylor and a lot of these wannabe local bands is that not only do we ambition and skill, but we have raw TALENT and SYNERGY that will get us where we want.
peace out
so many people liken the profession of being a musician to being a professional athelete but it's not nearly as difficult as people make it out
i'm not saying that it's easy but the reason that most people can't make it (based on what i gather from talking with local bands who are trying to make it/didn't make it) is because either
a. they gave up and went an easier route (getting some shitty stable job)
b. they just couldn't write new songs consistently
c. they had fights and drama with other members of the band causing the band to break up (faggots)
d. they decided it wasn't what they wanted to do (probably because they were only in a band to begin with because it was "cool" to be in a band and get chicks or whatever)
also, there are different levels of success. making a living off of music does not necessarily mean that you're going to be living comfortably
i liken it more to makin money offa art which i was like all about from birth-14 then i was like uhhhhh this isnt gonna happen so now its just some shit i do as a hobby or w/e
so its like projecting my own gay shit onto u or w/e
Oh, hi sQueef!

It's always good to have dreams but you should always have a plan b if things don't work out if they could. Only very few people actually make it to the top in the music/art business because the competition is fierce and numerous and even many famous artists I like have jobs to make ends meet.
It may be more than just a hobby for you but even if you accept that it is not your main income, it can still stay your life task.
If I draw, animate or compose stuff, I do it for the art, for the fun and for making a part of myself live on in the people who consume it; not for anything material but for something no amount of money in the world could ever give me...

pray that you are extremely fucking lucky
I got 500,000 views offa Brawl Funnies combined and without splittin it in half with Monks, I wouldve gotten 150 dollars about.
Now 500,000 views is pretty tough to do! I dont know how it is on other sites but I dont imagine its much different.
Anyway dont try and make a livin off flash. Maybe side money but you need a real fuckin job
i thought he said he was just doing flash for a side job so his folks dont nag him
not tryin to be assy, im just forgetful atm
make tower defense games
not joking
you can shit out the most generic boring game ever and as long as there's some eye candy and it's reasonably fun you can make a few hunnerd bucks easy
flash game sponsorships are pretty bangin
but you'll have to work with a coder and most of them are very annoying people and you'll have to split the cash so have fun with that
i'm not doin that shit i was just thinking along the lines of designing really basic shit for people (i.e. banners or ads or logos) for small businesses that don't have enough money for a GOOD designer

I want to get into the movie-making industry producing shit similar to darren aronofsky, shane acker, don hertzfeldt, the like. I know its farfetched, but not trying is for gays and gayer gays.
I have a real shitty plan to get there.
-Graduate from edinboro with a cinema BFA with a top-effort portfolio and a demo reel for my senior year.
-Apply to several hundred studios. Applying online's for chumps, but traveling to find all of them would be way too much. I'd have to make a hit list of every decent-looking studio in america and apply as much as possible to every job possible. I wouldn't mind doing back-fucking-yardigans. I'd hate the content but it's fucking something.
-If that fails (most likely) I'd have to end up with a reliable linear source of income, so fast food or something would have to suffice, if not some office job through family connections, maybe live with my sister.
-No matter what job I land I'd be working on something on the side to get noticed for writing and arting and stuff. I have a movie idea in writing now.
I'm thinking of double majoring in art education for a more sturdy thing to get into.

you forgot the most important thing
make a good short film
Yeah you can't just be like OOOO I SAW THIS ONE THING THIS GUY MADE I WANNA DO IT TOO.
Without industry experience, you're another guy who watches movies with a piece of paper from a college.

Well I forgot to mention that that was the "creative thing on the side in college and in the workforce afterward"
well uh if you're doing a cinema BFA you'd probably be making that short film in school or at least starting it there
Quote from: RobHalfordYeah you can't just be like OOOO I SAW THIS ONE THING THIS GUY MADE I WANNA DO IT TOO.
I didn't mean that, I meant just doing stuff similar to that in the film industry. They're my source of inspiration. I'd like to make movies that interest an audience. I'd of course start with this short I'm writing that would summarize the meat of the movie. I'd hate to do this like shane acker with 9 but it seems like a good way to show off a movie idea, and alone a good idea for a 10 minute short. I'd elaborate on the movie idea and the short but I'm still writing. :>

You can't hop into the director's chair right off the bat. You need to work on video/film shoots and get a feel for how everything works. I do a lot of production crew work and grunt work on shoots. Film doesn't interest me in the slightest. I hate shooting film and I hate being on camera. But working on these shoots is great experience and allows me to build up contacts.

Yeah shit I was feeling too ambitious with this project. I can't do the short in college because I can't direct it after. I have to rethink my whole plan thing. Thanks rob.
I don't plan now on working with film or video on a set, but with animation studios, but I imagine the workplace is pretty similar. I'd like to just get into the workforce and get to know people at first. I need that to be my primary objective in my college times. I have to start detailing plans. shit shit shit shit shit
