2009 was a good year for me. By sheer luck I managed to get some jobs far beyond my skill level and pulled in some decent money to the tune of 7 thousand smackeroons. the first time in my life where i've not been teetering on being a hobo and finally having any real money WHICH HAS BEEN NICE.
which i have been hording like a horrible rat beast and not spending at all.
finally decided to spend some of it.
2008 and 09 also made me realize that alot of my inefficiencies and problems stem from one central problem:
i use a pc from 96 with very little upgrades to it.
Intel Celeron D CPU with 3.2 GHz
Ati Radeon Xpress 200 Series graphics card
Realtek RTL8139 Family Fast Ethernet adapter
890 mb of ram (was originally 80)
originally had 4gb of harddrive space. upgraded it in like 2003 to have 20gb.
A piece of SHIT.
Anyway.
Here's the new pc (subject to change)
Theres a high to likely chance I'll be changing to 4gb of ram (for windows 7 porpoises) and changing the graphics card to a GeForce GTX 250 1 gig card. I'm going to run it by a few other guys I know who run a pc parts store to see what they think, since 950 is a PRETTY HEFTY price and I'm sure they can recommend me parts that do the same job for cheaper.
Hopefully I should have a nice new computer by the next week or so. (if im lucky)
also hi first serious zekey post in several months
i wish i had that kind of money

4 gb of RAM isn't as great as you may think it is. i need to upgrade to 8gb, because my comp cant handle all the shit i put on.
though maybe its because i have MSN, chrome, itunes, zonealarm, skype, steam, AIM, dead space, flash, and photoshop on all at the same time.
ah well.
but yeah, maybe get at least 6gb of RAM.

Quote from: rtiljust in case anyone doesn't know yet, more than 4gb of ram on a 32-bit OS won't even show up
i thought the limit was 3?
no, it's 4
and the limit for a 64-bit is something like 128
but even then, most apps are still 32-bit and can only allocate 4gigs. but the good thing is that with all that extra ram space each 32-bit app has more breathing room

2GB is good enough for a lot of things
4GB is good enough to run just about anything
8GB is just overkill
do you really have to run all of those programs all at the same time, even in the background?
i'm easily annoyed by long startup times

iTunes is a huge resource hog. If you use a program like foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/) or hell, any other music program in existence, your 4GB of ram probably wouldn't be such a problem.

also, more ram is preferable to faster ram, so i\\\'d say save the money to go towards another 2gb
the hard drive performance will not be noticeable and i could write out a big diagram but imho zekey is better off with the drive he picked out if only because it is significantly larger.
Quote from: CVGCongrats of getting a new computer : ) Wow you've been doing Polypeptide with only 890 RAM?! How is that even possible?
Everyone keeps asking me this question and the answer is always the same: very slowly and patiently
Most of the latter half of poly I've been doing on my tablet PC. Which is considerably faster and has allowed me to do stuff like this (http://www.thebackalleys.com/ok/public/player.php?file=590Uv9_Experiment19_Scene_6.swf) without the computer freezing due to not having memory.
I'll probably use this new PC to do the final export on the film when its done in 2056 since I'll assume it will take alot of memory to render.
Anyway.
Final rig.
Slightly smaller hard drive than before. 4gb of ram. Not much else changed too much.

I picked AMD because the intel cpu I had picked out was a core 2 quad 5 bucks more andwas only 2.66 ghz while this one comes at 3.4 ghz quad core out of the box. the logic made sense to me.

Works great.
imo get q6600 and overclock to 3 Ghz or higher
Quote from: Billyimo get q6600 and overclock to 3 Ghz or higher
Isn't a q6600 only 2.4 ghz? anyway my brother (who paid for the computer) doesn't want to overclock so I picked a proc that is fast out of the box. also 3.4 would be tough to OC to from 2.4 you would definitely need an aftermarket CPU fan or something.
i have a q6600 and i just got a $30 heatsink for it and OCed it all the way to 3.2 and that\\\'s enough for crysis on maximum detail settings at 1920x1200, with the 4870 video card being the thing holding the performance back, so if you don\\\'t plan on staying on the super cutting edge i\\\'d say that\\\'s pretty amazing bang for buck.
i guess times have changed and it\\\'s hard to get a q6600 anymore, so maybe phenom ii x4 940 would be the best buy if you overclocked it
ugh, well I already bought the 965 but I am sure it will be fine, if I OC that shit up to like 4.0 then I think that is pretty crazy fast.
it will probably be even crazy faster if you OC that shit up to like 10.9
