charcoal is good when you learn to not smear it the fuck everywhere but its pretty awesome just remember to have paper handy so you can rest your hands on it

I recently found the only way of producing "artsy fartsy" stuff that seems to fit me perfectly.

Ok kid
youre going to need markers. A LOT OF EM. I use some bigass Chartpack markers of various colors.
Youre also going to need Colors. I have like 100 different prismacolor pencils.

Fun technique is to draw the outline/sketch of whataver it is you want to draw in pencil. then kinda erase it but letting some makrs of it. Then use the markers to draw the basic tone of every part of the drawing, then, once it is all done, use the buncha pencils to draw over the markers.

I described it perhaps a bit too boring but you should try it out its nice after a while
I have some examples of it in my recent art thread

pastels are kinda pricey but they're pretty fun to work with and you can make some pretty beautiful things with them

a simple ballpoint pen can be fun to use, i tend to use it a lot in drawing so i can doodle on both sides of my sketchbook without worrying about smears

It isn't awesome to start with at all, but of all mediums besides pencil I'd recommend charcoal. It's good for grayscale works. I'm still shit at it but it's starting to grow on me.
A neat thing one can do with charcoal is use the side of a compressed stick to color in the whole paper, smudge it all with paper towel to a medium gray, and use the charcoal with a kneaded eraser to additively and subtractively shade and design your subject. I find it easier...
This way there's also less worrying about the messiness the medium can get to.

When I get a lot of free time, I make collages out of magazine clippings and scrapbook paper.
